Short Straw: 1993 BMW E34 525i Touring – Sold?

Oct 2020 | Classifinds, Wagon Wednesday

December 1st Update – We just confirmed the Craigslist ad for this ride expired and with no replacement listing found, we’re assuming this car sold.  This one may have got away, but if you have your heart set on something similar, email us the details of what you’re looking for or call Rudy directly at (908)295-7330.

Owning five BMWs can be a blessing or a curse depending on your perspective.  The private seller of this 1994 E34 535i Touring they listed in October 2020 on Craigslist in Somerset, New Jersey may be leaning towards the latter as they decided five BMWs are one two many.  Despite owning since 2015, this Biller picked the imaginary “short straw” from this private seller’s mind, so they now have this 224K mile example listed for $4,200. A quick check of the NADA Guides Classic Car Online Valuation Tool validates this private seller has his BMW priced at the lower end of the current “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range of $3,950, $5,225, and $6,925, respectively.

BMW produced the third generation, known internally as the E34 series, from 1987 through 1996.  While BMW produced the four-door sedan throughout the E34’s life cycle, the company did not launch the “Touring” station wagon body style until 1992, which was a first for the 5 Series. While the example here does not feature either, the E34 generation marked the first time BMW offered all-wheel-drive (the 525iX) and the first V8 engine (540i).

Here’s a vintage MotorWeek Retro Review of the 1993 BMW 5251 Touring we came across posted on YouTube:

If the notion of maintaining high-mileage E34 BMWs doesn’t scare you, then this 535i Touring may be the car for you.  Good luck with the purchase!

Here’s the seller’s description:

“Up for sale is my 1993 525i touring. I’ve owned this car since 2015, but with 4 other BMWs, it’s time to let one go.
221k miles, Schwarz black paint with tan leather interior, clean title, working double sunroof.
Comes with OEM BMW rubber floor mats front and rear, cargo cover/dog net for the rear hatch, original head unit with radio code, original owners manual and associated literature, and 2 keys. The car will come on stock 15-inch wheels (Style 2s) with good tires. *****The BBS pictured are not included*****
The car is pretty much stock besides a few changes. Tints all around, ellipsoid headlights, lowered on Vogtland springs/KYB shocks, rear inner fenders were slightly rolled to accept the 3 piece style 5s you see pictured, aftermarket head unit with AUX and Sirius XM radio.  The front driver’s side window regulator is new, but has come off recently come off track. Front suspension and headliner will also need to be addressed.

I absolutely love this car, but currently don’t need another project while owning 2 swapped E30s!

$4200 – Located in Somerset, NJ 08873
