Classifind Cut 22: 1993 TVR Chimaera 400 – SOLD!
October 23rd Update: While updating our Sports Car Saturday database, we confirmed the private seller of this rare TVR deleted their Craigslist ad, so we’re now able to call this one “Sold!” This one may have got away, but if you have your heart set on something similar, email us the details of what you’re looking for or call Rudy directly at (908)295-7330.
If you’re not familiar with the small independent British sports car maker TVR, you’re not alone. The three letters come from the founder’s name, Trevor Wilkinson, and over the years the company often flirted with bankruptcy as it offered spotty-quality sports cars based on mainstream manufacturer’s mechanicals. In the mid-80’s, the company tried very unsuccessfully to import their Ford-powered 280i into the U.S. I test drove a new one while a senior in college; fun car, but you could tell the cars were not put together very well at all.
Following their 280i disaster and under new ownership, TVR focused on bespoke sports cars without any intention of trying to federalize exports for U.S. consumption. One of those products was the Rover-V8-powered Chimaera (pronounced Ki-Mare-Rah) produced from 1992 through 2003. While not available here when new, the EPA’s 25-year exemption rule means these cars can now be imported without meeting U.S. regulations. A first-year Chimeara originally listed October 2020 on Craigslist in Raleigh North Carolina an optimistic asking price of $24,995 based on listings in Great Britain. While we typically say “Good Luck With The Purchase!” in all of our features, in this case, the Bloke who decides to dip his toes in TVR ownership will really need it!
