1 of 639: 1991 Volkswagen Cabriolet Etienne Aigner Edition – SOLD!

Nov 2020 | Classifinds, Topless Thursday

November 18th Update: We just confirmed the private seller of this unique Golf Cabrio deleted their Craigslist ad, so we’re now able to call this one “Sold!”  While this one got away, if you have your heart set on something similar, email us the details of what you’re looking for or call Rudy directly at (908)295-7330.

Volkswagen’s venerable Golf-based Cabriolet received many special editions over the years.  Most enthusiasts immediately recall Wolfsburg Editions as the most notable example.  Much less known is the one-year-only in the U.S. 1991 Etienne Aigner (pronounced ehtee-yen onyay) designer edition.  One of only 639 examples finished in the Mangrove Green color scheme was listed recently on Craigslist in Nesconset, New New York (Long Island) with 151K original miles and an asking price of $4,850.   Comparing this price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has his limited edition Cabriolet priced above this guide’s current “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range of $1,800, $2,900, and $3,575, respectively.  In this case, the high mileage is offset by the model’s rarity, and looking at recent Bring A Trailer sales confirms these 80s classics are on the rise.

In the early 1990s, Volkswagen hired French Fashion design house Etienne Aigner to develop a special edition Cabriolet.  Only offered in the U.S. for the 1991 model year, buyers could choose among three color schemes: Bordeaux Red, Bright Blue, or the Mangrove Green the example featured here is painted in.  Among the special trim and horseshoe embossed fabrics and leather used throughout, these were the first Cabriolets exported to the U.S. to feature canvas convertible tops.

Here’s a 1989 MotorWeek road test of the very similar ’89 VW Cabriolet:

Based on the pictures provided, this example appears to belie its 151,000 original miles.  While the seats appear to need new foam, an experienced upholsterer likely can use the original special fabric to preserve this rare example. The rare period correct Ronal wheels really pop against the exterior of this Cab.  If you’re looking to stand out a bit more from the VW cabriolet crowd, you’d be hard-pressed to find a rarer RADWood-eligible example. Good luck with the purchase!
