Black Beauty: 2002 Porsche Boxster 986 Base – SOLD!

Dec 2020 | Classifinds, Sports Car Saturday

December 17th Update: We just confirmed the private seller of this Porsche Boxster deleted their Craigslist ad, so we’re now able to call this one “Sold!”  While this one got away, if you have your heart set on something similar, email us the details of what you’re looking for or call Rudy directly at (908)295-7330.

It’s no secret we’re huge fans of Porsche’s original 986 Boxster produced for model years 1997 through 2004.  As far we’re concerned it’s a very comfortable, practical, and affordable modern sports car. The 6’5″ seller agrees with our assessment as he mentions it in his description of his black 2002 Porsche Boxster originally listed in December 2020 on Craigslist in Montclair, New Jersey with 67K miles and an asking price of $12,900.  The Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the ask falls nicely between this guide’s current #3 “Good” appraisal of $10,200 and its #2 “Excellent” appraisal of $16,800.

2002 was the last year before a mid-cycle refresh came along for 2003. While the condition and low mileage make this Boxster a great candidate, with the seller making no mention of it having been done, you should plan on immediately having the Intermediate Shaft (“IMS”) bearing updated as the 2.7L cars of this vintage were among the highest failure rate.  Consider it a $2,000 insurance policy (since you’re in there, you may as well replace the clutch too) to minimize the possibility of the engine self-destructing without warning.

Here’s the seller’s description:

“Selling my beautiful 2002 Porsche Boxster 986!
Drives powerfully and shifts smooth as butter.
No mechanical issues whatsoever.
It’s truly in extraordinary condition, inside and out.
Low mileage and always garage kept.
The title is clean and I have all of the service records.
For reference, I am 6’5” and I fit very comfortably.
Message me if you have any questions.”
