We’ve always been huge fans of “stanced” air-cooled Volkswagens. Our love for these started long ago with the just-right rake provided by lowered stock torsion bar suspensions highlighting either vintage Porsche Fuchs or Empi wheels. That “Cal-Look” styling has given way to the Rat-Rod-treatment while air-ride suspensions take the lowered look to a whole new level. A prime example is this 1967 Volkswagen Sqaureback listed earlier this week on Craigslist on Staten Island, New York with an asking price of $11,000. While Hagerty Insurance currently does not provide valuations for ’67 Squarebacks, the reliable Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool values for a stock example confirms this private seller has his custom VW priced between the #2 “Very Good” appraisal of $8,450 and the #1 “Excellent” estimate of $14,000 Volkswagen produced its Type 3 Squareback from 1961 to 1973, however, the company did not begin importing the two-door wagons into the U.S. until 1966 in an effort to compete against Chevrolet’s air-cooled Corvair. Squarebacks utilized a low-profile version of Volkswagen’s rear-engined, 4-cylinder air-cooled engine, as well as body-on-chassis construction while featuring pontoon styling in contrast to the Beetle’s articulated fender and running board setup. In 1974 Volkswagen replaced the Type 3s with the water-cooled, front-wheel-drive B1 Passat, better known as the Dasher in North America.
Volkswagen’s U.S. advertiser company simply nailed just about every commercial they developed for the brand during the 1960’s. This 1967 Squareback spot highlights the storage capacity and “Frunk” of the Sqaureback line:
If you’ve been wanting to do a VW Squareback build, this appears to be a solid example with the difficult part of changing out the stock suspension with a custom air ride system already complete. Throw in the fact the big-bore motor only has 500 miles on it and there’s a lot here to like. With the motor rebuild, suspension change, and floor pan replacement out of the way, you can focus your efforts to put your custom touches and taste to work on this wagon over the winter. “1967 VW Squareback perfect rad rod as is or perfect candidate to finish off where I left. Super hard to find a Squareback these days, especially one that has no structural rust and has a rebuilt motor.
Brand new full floor pans installed (3 months ago) with undercoating on the inside and underneath. No structural rust or rot anywhere. The engine is a dual carb 1600cc rebuilt (4 years ago, but has less than 500 miles on it since)

Car rides on a custom air ride setup done by the previous owner with some slight modifications to the geometry up from recently.
I have boxes of parts to finish the interior including, a full carpet set, all door card, headliner, front seat rebuilt kit (though the seats are in very good shape) new seat covers for the front, most of the rubber on the car is in good shape, but I have all new rubber for most of the car. Most of the electrical has been cleaned up, new Hella headlights, the car just drives great and looks even better.
Unfortunately, I have too much work to do on my home and I have too many other project cars. I have taken care of this one for the last, close to four years and now it’s time for someone else to take care of it.
