Swabian Snowmobile: 1991 Audi 200 20V Turbo Avant – Sold!
After selling over 75,000 vehicles in 1985, Audi’s U.S. sales totaled only 12,283 units in 1991 as it continued managing the fallout from the sudden unintended acceleration claims on its late 1980’s 5000 models. To further distance itself from those problems, Audi also renamed its 4000 and 5000 car lines the 100 and 200, respectively, while the term Avant became Audi-speak for “station wagon” through this period. Any Audi from 1991 is a rare sight today, however even rarer is finding a top-of-the-line 200 Quattro Turbo Avant like this one listed on Craigslist in Danville, Vermont said to be a two-owner car sourced from Wyoming with an asking price of $7,450. A quick scan of J.D. Powers NADA Guides Online Valuation Tool confirms the ask falls within this guide’s “Low”, “Average”, and “High” retail value range of $3,775, $5,900, and $7,950, respectively.
While YouTube provides tons of videos of similar Audi 200 Quattros being flogged in various ways, this one ripping through the snow while its turbo spools up is very fun to watch. This would be a very fun car to have tonight as my local area receives its share of a forecasted two feet of snow:
Despite their near non-existence in the U.S. at the time due to the unintended acceleration fears, it’s a shame because these are wonderfully capable and good looking cars benefitting from Audi’s extensive rallying experience through the 1980s. This example shows wear consistent with mileage nearing the 200K mile mark, so as long as the seller can provide proof of routine maintenance performed combined with a favorable pre-purchase inspection, this will be a very fun alternative to a modern SUV that is every bit as capable when the roads and/or weather turn bad. Good luck with the purchase.
Here’s the seller’s description:
“2 owner Wyoming car. Brand new VT Inspection sticker. Never seen VT Winter. New Toyo winter tires. This car is extremely rare and in exceptional condition. Must see and drive. Give a call 802 473 8769 and we can talk about this vehicle negotiation on price possible highly motivated seller will take any reasonable offer.
