Driver Doka: 1970 Volkswagen Double Cab Transporter – SOLD!

Volkswagen’s second-generation air-cooled Type 2 Transporter sold successfully throughout the world in a variety of pickup and van forms.  Like it or not, the U.S. 25% “Chicken Tax” import tariff launched in the 1960s (and still in place today) prevented VW from importing any pickup variation cost-effectively when new.  As a result, we always want to know the back story of how a pickup variant originally entered the U.S.  A prime example is this 1970 Volkswagen Three Door Crew Cab pickup originally listed in February 2021 on Craigslist in Walden, New York (Poughkeepsie). A driver quality example with repairable rust in the cab step-up area, the current caretaker is asking $15,000 for it. Unfortunately, since these trucks were never officially sold in the U.S., there’s no official pricing guide. However, a search of Bring a Trailer’s history confirms sales of two comparable models in restored condition fetched $21,000.

VW Transporters of any body style are very hot among enthusiasts right now, so given the very sound underbody of this example, the next caretaker may decide simply to drive as is.  However, if they smartly invest in rust repair and a new paint job, there is a high probability the next caretaker can at least break even on their investment. Whichever path you choose, good luck with the purchase!

“Hello. I have a 1970 Volkswagen Double Cab. Runs, drives, and looks pretty good. Does have some rust issues. I have up close and better pictures and videos as well. It is very drivable and runs down the road very straight 65-70 mph with no problem. Engine, trans, clutch, brakes all work well. The radio even works. Interior in very nice condition. Undercarriage in good condition. All glass is good. Most of the lights, blinkers, wipers are all working…. tires are good as well. I do have one of the doglegs and new door panels new in the box. Please message and I’ll send more pics and videos.
I don’t think there is a better one for sale for the money.
