While still under American Motors Corporation (“AMC”) and Renault combined management, designers started developing a smaller replacement for Jeep’s SJ Cherokee. Development accelerated when management learned GM was busy designing the new S-10 compact SUV and pickup line. When it debuted for the 1984 model year, unit-body construction helped the new XJ be 1,200 pounds lighter, 31 inches shorter, six inches narrower, and four inches lower than the Cherokee SJ it replaced.
In addition to unitized construction, engineers combined a ladder-boxed chassis integrated into the monocoque unit rather than relying on traditional separate body-on-frame construction. The design was rigid and sturdy and lightweight enough to facilitate the use of AMC’s new 2.5-liter/150-cubic-inch four-cylinder engine, which was really a Pontiac “Iron Duke” four. Optional and much more desirable was a modernized version of AMC’s virtually indestructible 252 cubic inch inline-six, which the XJ featured here is equipped with.
Jeep marketed XJs as Sportwagons, a precursor to the modern sport utility vehicle (“SUV”) before that term came into vogue. The XJ spawned competitors as other automakers noticed the design cannibalizing sales from traditional station wagons and later on, minivans. Built in various trim levels through 2001, the Jeep XJ Cherokee earned a reputation for off-road toughness that has even earned the respect of ardent CJ/XJ/TJ “Jeep Peeps”. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find unmodified examples of XJ Cherokees, so the example being auctioned here is special.
Gerald, the fifth and current caretaker of this 1998 Jeep XJ Cherokee Sport, reports that he purchased it just over one year ago with the intent to replace his long-term XJ when it was expected to finally become unreliable as a daily. Since that has yet to occur and he has run out of storage space, Gerald reports this rust-free white XJ Cherokee Sport is too nice to store outdoors.
Gerald reports that despite being registered in Michigan all of its life, this 1998 Cherokee Sport to date has never been used in winters as the previous owners were “Snowbirds” who stored the Jeep in their garage during winter months. Gerald reports that everything, including the Cruise Control and factory air conditioning work properly.

Does this Cherokee have cruise control? I can’t tell from the picture of the steering wheel. Is there anything mechanically not working? Like the AC or 4WD?
Hi Chris, we just confirmed with the seller this Cherokee has working cruise control and A/C that blows cold. Everything is in proper working order, so says the seller.
Can you arrange shipping to Seattle?
We don’t arrange shipping. We can, however, recommend a company you can contact and coordinate yourself.
Hi. Is this Cherokee have current registration and inspection? Couldn’t tell if there is a sticker on the windshield. Thanks.
The seller just confirmed this Jeep is currently registered. Michigan does not require inspections.
Is the jeep still located in Michigan or is it in Seattle?
This white 1998 Jeep is located in Michigan. There is a red 1994 Country model still for sale on our rides still available page that is located in Seattle. Apologies for the confusion.
