Ten model years after introducing its original 304 cubic inch Rocket V8, Oldsmobile continued to up the ante with its powerful V8. Less than a decade later, the base Rocket T-400 V-8 displaced 371 cubic inches with 9.5:1 compression and was rated at 277 horsepower, which was more than double the original 1948 engine’s output. However, that wasn’t good enough for the Oldsmobile product planners as they revised the division’s J2 performance option for the 1957 and 1958 model years with tri-power carburetors. For an extra $83, buyers who opted for the J2 package those model years received their Golden Rocket engine topped with a trio of progressively-linked, Rochester two-barrel carburetors combined with thinner header gaskets that raised the compression ratio to 10.00 to 1. During startup and around-town driving, the 371 acted like a two-barrel topped V8.  Floor it, and the engine’s 300 horsepower at 4,600 RPM, and 415 foot-pounds of torque at 3,000 RPM propelled these land yachts to 60 miles per hour in just under eight seconds.

With less than 35,000 original miles, this Victorian White and Champagne Mist Metallic two-tone, survivor quality, 1958 Oldsmobile Super 88 features its original J-2 Equipped 371 cubic inch Golden Rocket engine in addition to all of its original chrome, stainless steel trim, emblems. Reported to be pulled out of long-term storage in 2006, the car received a full mechanical sorting at that time to make it roadworthy again.

Purchased at Mecum Kissimmee in January 2017, in addition to routine maintenance and a new battery in May of this year, the only thing the current caretaker has done to this car is the installation of a modern satellite radio mounted discretely in the glove box that can be easily returned to stock should the next owner choose to do so.
