1976 Chevrolet Blazer Chalet – Sold?

One of the interesting outcomes of the Pandemic and its associated lock-downs over the past year was an increase in demand for RVs that allow people to get out and enjoy the outdoors while maintaining social distancing. Brand new manufacturers cannot make RVs fast enough right now and that in turn has pushed up the sale and values of used units. Through in a dash of Bring-A-Trailer induced vehicle value hyperinflation on certain models and you’ll realize what a bubble the vintage RV market is right now.

One such example is the collaboration of Chevrolet Trucks and Chinook to produce nearly 2,000 Blazer Chalet RVs from 1976 and 1977. While at first glance these vehicles may look like a roofless Blazer sporting an in-bed camper unit, the fact is the pop-top fiberglass RV body is integrated into the Blazer’s body and is not removable. This setup made for a nicely sized weekend camper capable of going anywhere.

Up until last year, you could buy used versions of these for just a few thousand dollars. Our very own Jeff Lavery wrote about this example in September 2018 where the Buy-It-Now price was only $3,500. Fast forward two-and-a-half years to just last month when Bring A Trailer auctioned this mint condition, 32K original mile example for an eye-watering $125,000.  Once again, BaT is the high tide that lifts all boats beyond affordability as this rusty but sorted 1976 Chalet originally listed in March 2021 on Craigslist in Arbutus, Maryland for the asking price of $48,000 proves.  Just two years ago this Chalet in this condition would be lucky to achieve $7,500 let alone the nearly fifty large the current caretaker expects now.  While the camper portion presents well and this Chalet features a Jasper-rebuilt engine, the Bazer body is clearly in need of rust repair.

Here’s the seller’s description:

“76 Chevy Blazer Chalet. Only a few made. 5000 miles on a Jasper engine. All new brakes from the master cylinder to the cylinders, everything. It is the deluxe version with fold-out bunk beds. Fridge runs on 110v, 12v, or propane. Propane stove and heater. Cabin lights. Not painted in over 30 years, so any rust is easily seen and not covered up with Bondo and such. This is an honest truck that is ready to go cross country.”

    Well …. entertaining as the BaT auction was for Chalet #0429, what the auction result says about the relative values of these is a little more complicated. As viewed within the comments at its auction page, there were several bidders up until the $47,500 point, but afterward, there were just the two bidders who blew right past the rig’s initial $59,900 asking price in the Hemmings ad the sellers placed before listing it on ebay for $69,900. Either of the two remaining bidders could have saved a bundle of money if they were a little more informed about it. Then there is how the rig was said to be a single owner vehicle, while the explanation within the comments section about the used car dealer plate on the back was, shall we say, somewhat questionable, which still may be a problem with its true collector value. The overall question could be asked of whether it was really only worth around $47,500, or is worth $125 grand to only two guys who’d kill just to be able to own a “time capsule preserved” Chalet.

    Regarding the rusty rig above which certainly doesn’t fit that description, it does seem to have a nicer interior than is commonly seen, but with that much surface rust showing through, one really has to wonder how much unseen rust there is under the cab carpet and within the rocker panels and lower parts of the fenders. This is one of those where a first-hand visit for close inspection is critical in order to avoid severe buyers remorse.

    What’s it worth? Prior to the BaT auction of #0429, the high end prices for rigs that polished up really well with zero observable rust but were still plagued with sizeable restoration faults were no more than $35 grand, at least that I’m aware of. From 16 years of watching sales of these at ebay, Craigslist, etc, the amount of rust on this one is something that really kills most any asking price. It may be restorable, but its sale price would have to be considerably lower to justify simply beginning to restore it.
