If you’re a collector car enthusiast, then you probably know one of the hottest trends in the market right now is vintage pickups and SUVs. Leading that charge is first-generation Broncos. Ford originally developed the first-generation Bronco as a compact off-road vehicle using its own chassis designed to compete against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout. Launched in 1966, the first-generation Bronco changed very little through 1977 before being replaced by the much larger, F-150 based second-generation model. Interestingly, it’s not just for low-mileage originals or full-blown restorations to like-new condition. Enthusiasts are especially interested in Broncos already set up for serious off-roading.
If you’re looking for a stock Bronco to show off at your local Cars & Coffee, this is not the truck for you. If however, your idea of a fun weekend is trailering of your dedicated off-road SUV to your favorite off-road park to get dirty, then read on.
The current caretaker, Barry, recently completed an eight-month, frame-off amateur restoration that included him painting his Bronco himself. Additional modifications include a lift kit, transmission kit, a 351 cubic inch Windsor V8 fitted with a mild cam, and a topped with 625 CFM Holley carburetor. Designed for harsh off-road and mud bog duty, Barry fitted custom diamond plating for the dashboard and key body areas. For easy access to the engine and front suspension, Barry fitted a front-tilting fiberglass clip featuring a custom fabricated grille. Safety features include a fire bottle and four-point seat harnesses.
The LemonSquad Pre-Purchase Inspection (“PPI”) provides an honest assessment of this driver-quality Bronco off-roader. The mechanic who performed the inspection also provides over one hundred photographs detailing Barry’s build.
