Classifind Cut: 1964 AMC Rambler American Convertible – SOLD!

by | May 2021 | Classifinds, Topless Thursday

June 11, 2021 Update – we confirmed the seller of this Rambler “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call Rudy directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.

May 7, 2021 Update – We just confirmed the private seller of this Rambler American deleted their original listing and replaced it with a fresh Craigslist post. The pictures, description, and $7,500 asking price all remain the same.

For 1964, the small independent American Motors turned to Dick Teague (think AMX) to redesign the Rambler American. The stylish completely new car featured a six-inch longer wheelbase that provided a smooth ride.  AMC focused its marketing on the economy of its redesigned-by-Dick- models, advertising that was previously only popular during the Great Depression.  The company’s series of “Love Letters to Rambler” advertisements included “ordinary user testimonials” about the economy and reliability of their Ramblers, rather than in pursuit of buyers in the whole compact car market segment. The campaign proved successful as AMC sold over 160,000 units in 1964.

Sitting at the top of the American 440 lineup was the two-door convertible such as this driver-quality example we first spotted on Craigslist in May 2021 in New Hartford, New York (Utica) reported to be a California car in need of a new interior for $7,500 currently. Comparing that price against the Collector Car Market Review Online Tool confirms the private seller has their American priced between this guide’s #3 “Good” estimate of $6,400 and its #2 “Very Good” appraisal of $9,900.

With only four, very dark exterior pictures and none of the interior, we think this Rambler may prove to be a diamond in the rough that will look better in person.  We say enjoy this Rambler with the interior in its current state now and spend next winter reupholstering the inside.

Here’s the seller’s description:

“AMC Rambler American 440. Nice Solid Driver, Runs like a top, Automatic Transmission, 6 cyl, Odometer works and reads 84,000, Power convertible top works perfectly, Additional parts available. It needs to be reupholstered or seat covers and could use paint and a new top. Original California car has been driven in convertible weather only and garaged when not in use. It has been a fun family car that always turns heads.

Brand new 60 spoke wire wheels and redline tires! Rare ANSA dual exhaust.
New convertible boot to match the interior. Many more options.”
