If you need to get 50 miles per gallon, why drive a Prius when you can drive this 1982 Volkswagen Rabbit Caddy Diesel we found posted in May 2021 on Craigslist in Lakeland, Florida for $8,025. Our typical pricing guides currently do not provide valuations on these Mk1 Rabbit pickups, however, this 1981 Rabbit Diesel recently sold on Bring A Trailer at no reserve for $10,000.
Volkswagen produced Rabbit pickups in its stillborn Westmoreland, Pennsylvania assembly plant from 1978 to 1984 with two engine choices: a 1.7 Liter gas engine or the 1.6 Liter diesel power plant featured in this example. Connected to a five-speed manual transmission, the fifth overdrive gear was uniquely labeled “E” rather than the traditional “5.” Outside of the U.S. Volkswagen branded Rabbit pickups as the VW Caddy.
Based on the seller’s description this Rabbit pickup appears to be a nice driver-quality example you can daily if desired, as long as you don’t mind the relaxed pace this UTE accelerates at.
Here’s the seller’s one-sentence description:
“Runs well, was my daily driver, gets 50 miles to the gallon. In very good condition.”
