Williamsburg Edition: 1979 Lincoln Town Car Hot Rod Project – Make Offers

Wednesday, June 9, 2021 Update – The high bid of only $1,200 was not enough to meet the reserve on this ’79 Lincoln Hot Rod, so we’re moving the car over to our “Rides Still Available” page where you can make reasonable offers.

GuysWithRides.com is pleased to offer this powertrain-modified 1979 Lincoln Town for our latest reserve auction lot. Bidding opens Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at Noon Eastern Time and continues for 14 days through Tuesday, June 8 at 7:00 pm. This custom Lincoln Town Car is currently approximately one hour north of the Bronx, New York City.

The 1979 Town Car presented here left the factory as one of the rare two-tone Williamsburg Editions the company produced from 1977 through 1979. Worth noting is that these special editions were Lincoln’s only factory two-tone Town Cars of the 1970s. In addition to a unique dashboard plaque and aforementioned two-tone paint, Williamsburg Town Cars featured a full vinyl roof, power vent windows, six-way power twin comfort lounge seat, and lighted vanity mirrors. Buyers either opted for the special velour cloth as this example features or full leather. Power was the same 400 cubic inch V8 powering all other Town Cars that year.

The current caretaker, Roy, came across this Lincoln four years ago as a barn find with a seized engine. Since that time he invested heavily in modernizing the powertrain in the form of 4.6L V8 Police Interceptor sending power to a Ford 4R70W four-speed automatic transmission. Roy removed the long since faded factory vinyl top and changed the original two-tone silver with a hobbyist-quality black repaint. While the repaint is presentable, we believe a thorough day or two of polishing will maximize the luster of the respray.

Setting off the sheer size of this Town Car are massive 22″ five-spoke aftermarket rims that we personally like much better than the car’s original 15″ hubcaps.

While mechanically sorted that starts, runs, and drives well, in the spirit of full transparency we note the following items will still need to be sorted to full enjoy this modernized Town Car:

  • The speedometer cable compatible with the revised powertrain has not been retrofitted. Currently, a dash-mounted speedometer utilizing GPS technology to provide speed readings.
  • The air conditioning and heating systems need to be properly sorted. While there is currently a floor-mounted unit providing front-seat passengers some temperature control, we recommend the next buyer prepare to install a Vintage Air type kit to provide the this Town Car with HVAC passengers expect when riding in a Lincoln Town Car.

The table below summarizes the current pricing estimates from both Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool and The Collector Car Market Review that include factoring in premiums for the factory sunroof and the Williamsburg Edition trim:
