Pristine Collector’s Edition: 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC – SOLD!
June 11, 2021 Update – we confirmed the seller of this Lincoln “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call Rudy directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.
May 23, 2021 – The seller of this Lincoln just replaced the original listed with a fresh one on Craigslist. This time around, he lowered his asking price by two thousand to $15,000.
If there’s one thing Lincoln is known for, it’s building high-end personal luxury coupes that are big on size and comfort, and low on miles per gallon. The final iteration of this classic model that even today remains synonymous with the Lincoln brand is the Lincoln Mark VIII coupe. This 1998 model originally listed in May 2021 on Craigslist in Wesley Chapel, Florida is one of only a handful of “final fling” Collector’s Editions made before the model was phased out, with a revised asking price of $15,000 (down from the original $17,000). Comparing this price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool reveals that this seller has priced his car well above the Concours price tag of $12,000 – but given how few of these Collector’s Editions were made, does he have a point?
If you spend any time watching mobster films from the 1970s to the present day, there’s a good chance you’ll see a big-body Lincoln coupe being driven by a hitman within the first five minutes of watching. It makes sense – loads of luxury, huge trunks, and engine displacement that earned you bragging rights, even if the actual power output was nothing to be proud of. By the late 80s, the Mark series had gotten some of its mojo back with the 5.0L V8-powered Mark VII, which came in a variety of flavors including the famous Bill Blass edition and gorgeous monochrome LSC. The Mark VIII was clearly an attempt to bring Lincoln’s classic coupe into the modern era, but it was too late: demographics were changing quickly, and the personal luxury coupe just didn’t translate to 90s luxury car shoppers.
Here’s a MotorWeek RetroReview of the essentially identical 1987 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC posted on YouTube:
Now, as mentioned above, this Mark VIII is priced well above Hagerty’s top value tier. However, given this is quite literally one of the last cars made and it has very low mileage with excellent cosmetics – well, it could be seen as a touch unrepeatable. The seller pegs mileage at 64,000, and given the Collector’s Edition trim represents a series of cosmetic upgrades, finding a low mileage car helps ensure those details remain in excellent nick. These limited edition models received two-tone leather interiors; unique badges; woodgrain trim emblazoned with “Collectors Edition”; unique floor mats; and, to top it all off, an eight-piece silver ingot gift set featuring each era of the Mark series. The seller is the original owner, who also happened to spring for the $365 White Pearlescent Tri-coat Metallic paint option. This Mark VIII is expensive, but it’s also likely one of the best ones left. Good luck with the purchase if you take this Lincoln home.
