Restore or Restomod: 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Wagon Project – SOLD!

May 2021 | Craigslist ClassiFINDS, Wagon Wednesday

March 9, 2021 Update – decent mid-sixties Chevelle project cars for $5,000 are rare to find these days, so we weren’t surprised the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing just days after posting it.  Consequently, we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call Rudy directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.

1960s vintage station wagon project cars for sale for under $5,000 are becoming very rare finds these days, especially if the car in question happens to be a Chevrolet.  With the popularity of classic wagons on the rise combined with an abundance of brand new aftermarket replacement parts, you have your choice of either restoring or building a street machine out of this non-running 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Station Wagon currently offered at $5,000 in March 2021 on Craigslist in Newark, New York (Rochester). Comparing that price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the private seller has their Chevelle priced well below this guide’s #4 “Fair” (Daily Driver) estimate of $9,200.  Interestingly, the  Collector Car Market Review Online Tool provides a different assessment as in this case the asking price falls between this guide’s #4 “Fair” estimate of $4,050 and its #3 “Good” appraisal of $8,300.

Here’s the seller’s thorough description:

“Please take the time to read the whole description. Time to let go of my Rare 66 malibu wagon project that I have had for years. This was an old barn find about 10 years ago. Only around 17,000 of these built, Pretty much complete with the factory 283/powerglide.  I had this running good about 8 years ago, but the motor is currently stuck, so I pulled the plugs and sprayed all of the cylinders with pb blaster. I have a good running 402 big block chevy that can go with the car for an additional price if you are interested,,But its not included in this sale,,, Most guys will probably just want to put a Ls motor in it nowadays! The car is from new jersey and was never driven in the salt but it still has some rust, it will need a drivers side front floor patch, and a little floor work in the rear storage compartment, but the rest of the floors look good. Has a real gm ss hood that has been poorly patched along the front edge, but does have a nice set of factory scoops. The tailgate is solid but needs to have the dent pulled out and currently does not open. The passenger side quarter panel needs some dents pulled out and some rust repair but the roof is straight, I believe an el camino quarter panel is almost the same as the wagon, The car has a real nice frame under it that just needs cleaned up. This still has the original fold down back seat and all of the deluxe seat belts, The dash is in nice shape and the radio hole is uncut! The car appears to have 90% of its original paint so at least its not loaded with fiberglass and you can see what you are buying. I didnt get the windshield stainless with the car back when I bought it but I believe that a 4 door sedan or el camino is the same. The doors all open and close like a new car,, Car comes with all 4 vintage 15” cragar mags, and it rolls, steers ,and stops! but does not run,, I have the clean new jersey title and the car is a project that is sold as is, First 5,000 obo, Sorry no trades,No texts! No tire kickers! Serious buyers Please feel free to give me a call anytime for more details about the car 31five 5seven3 233eight and just leave a clear message with your callback number. Thanks
