NEW! Award 74: 1978 Rolls Royce Corniche I Drophead Coupe – Sold?

by | Jun 2021 | Classifinds, NEW Award, Topless Thursday

June 16, 2021 Update – We just confirmed the listing for this Rolls Royce “Classifind” expired, so with no replacement found we’re assuming this ride “Sold?” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call Rudy directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.

June 7, 2021 – We just confirmed the private seller of this beautiful Rolls Royce just lowered their asking price by five thousand dollars to $72,000. Despite a sizable decrease, the revised ask still leaves this car well above the #1 estimates so we predict this Roller will continue to linger.

Great looking, apparently well-preserved classic car cheapened by a horrible choice of strip mall background. With plenty of great parks and Lake Michigan shoreline to choose a proper background, we’re fascinated by the seller’s choice of taking pictures in a random parking lot of their 1978 Rolls Royce Corniche I Drophead Coupe originally listed in May 2021 on Craigslist near Chicago, Illinois for what is still an incredibly ambitious asking price of $77,000, which is down from the original ask of $79,000. Comparing that price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the private seller has their Corniche I inappropriately priced $22,800 higher than this guide’s #1 “Concours” appraisal of $56,100. As a second data point, the  Collector Car Market Review Online Tool confirms the asking price is $12,400 above this guide’s #1 “Excellent” appraisal of $66,600. Third, Classic.com ties with Hagerty’s mid-fifties estimate. Even Dean Martin’s former 1980 Corniche I only hammered at $72,000 last fall during an online Barrett-Jackson event. While this is a stunning, low-mileage, well-detailed, and documented example maintained by a Rolls Royce Owners Club member,  the asking price is way out of line with the current market and consequently, the current caretaker earns our latest “NEW!” (short for “No Effin Way!”) Award.
