Collector’s Collection: 1968 Chrysler New Yorker Four Door Hardtop – Sold?

For many years, if you considered yourself a “Mopar Man” but your career had not taken your salary far enough up the corporate ladder to afford an Imperial, you opted for Chrysler’s Flagship, the New Yorker. By 1968 the New Yorker nameplate had been around for nearly thirty years and this model year was the final one before Chrysler introduced its popular “Fuselage Styling” in all of its 1969 full-size models. The open and airy greenhouse of this generation of New Yorker is one full display in this white-over-back four-door hardtop example we spotted originally in June 2021 on Craigslist in Chicago, Illinois with an asking price of $15,000 currently. A check of the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the private seller has their New Yorker priced between this guide’s #2 “Excellent” estimate of $14,200 and its #1 “Concours” appraisal of $16,700.  Interestingly, the  Collector Car Market Review Online Tool provides a different assessment as in this case the asking price is $2,300 above this guide’s #1 “Excellent” appraisal of $12,700.

Chrysler New Yorker Styling changes for 1968 included a new grille, bumpers, front sheet metal, rear fenders, and rear deck. Although the Newport and 300 four-door hardtops received a new, sportier roofline shared with Dodge and Plymouth, the New Yorker continued with the roofline first introduced in 1965. The main exterior features distinguishing the New Yorker from the other Chrysler lines were a full-width grille with a rectangular pattern, repeated at the rear by the full-width deck trim, and continuous lower bodyside molding. Chrysler production rebounded with the year setting a record at 264,863 cars built, 48,143 of which were New Yorkers.

While we have to admit the custom twenty-two-inch rims fill the wheel wells of this New Yorker nicely, the rubber band sidewalls likely ruin what is a very gentle ride provided by the car’s torsion bar suspension. The seller provides the option of buying this California car once from a collector’s collection with the stock rims and our choice would be that option.
