Flexible Four-Wheeler: 1976 International Scout Terra – Sold?
July 26, 2021 Update – We just confirmed the listing for this “Classifind” expired, so with no replacement found we’re assuming this ride “Sold?” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call us directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.
Hoping to expand on the mild success of their Scout II, in 1976 International Harvester (“IH”) management expanded the lineup by expanding their SUV’s size. Specifically, by adding eighteen inches between the doors and rear wheel wells, IH designers created the Scout Traveler and the Scout Terra. The Traveler was essentially a Scout II with more cargo room, while the Terra was the pickup version. Unlike the Scout II’s removable steel top, the Traveler and Terra relied on fiberglass versions that were also bolt-in units.
What we didn’t know until seeing this post is just how convertible a Terra is from a Traveler. This 1976 Terra originally listed in June 2021 on Craigslist in Doylestown, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) shows that by simply bolting in the steel bulkhead behind the front bench seat, you can then attach Terra’s shorter pickup roof and you then have a very capable pickup.
A driver-quality example with the typical rust in the wheels and underside, the asking price of $19,200 includes the cost of both tops. Comparing this price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the private seller has their flexible four-wheeler priced two hundred dollars more than this guide’s #3 “Good” estimate of $19,000. Similarly, the Collector Car Market Review reveals the seller’s ask is eight hundred less than this guide’s #2 “Very Good” estimate of $19,800. Given the overall condition of this Scout Terra, we would hope the seller has some room for negotiation when setting that price.
