We’ve always admired the smoothness of Jaguar’s 5.3L V12 when one is running properly. That’s why love how well we observed the cold start of this black cat the day we arrived to film it. Not only does this XJS feature a rare-for-these black exterior, but you’ll also note that unlike most coupes of this vintage, this example does not feature a sunroof.
If you’re looking for a mechanically sorted Jaguar XJS V12 that is only in need currently of cosmetic updates, then this might be the car for you.
First the good: In our test drive around town, we were impressed by how smooth the Jaguar V12 combined with a three-speed GM TurboHydramatic 400 ran around town. Just prior to the current caretaker’s purchase, this XJS passed New York State’s rigorous Vehicle Inspection test. The body is very solid with only a minor amount of light surface rust on the wheel arch. You may notice how the passenger side features the European headlight while the driver’s side uses the US standard dual round light setup. The good news is the remaining pair of each style are included as part of the sales, so you can choose which style you would prefer to run (our preference is for the U.S. set up as now it is a bit rarer to come across now that so many cars have been converted to the European style lights over the years.
Now for the bad: The seats need a qualified upholstery shop to restitch some of the front bucket seat seams. The air conditioning and tachometer are currently not operating. While the paint is shiny, we believe a weekend’s worth of paint correction and wax will have this big cat looking even better. While the mid-pipe of this Jag’s exhaust currently rattles in certain situations, a replacement part is included as part of the sale.
Onto the Ugly: Headliners are usually the first interior component to go in these cars, and this Jag has already had its removed, exposing the unsightly insulation. At some point, the factory aluminum rims were replaced by authentic Dayton wire wheels that unfortunately now exhibit surface rust that may not be repairable. If that’s the case, we would try to source a set of factory aluminum rims to match the spare tire.
