Two Tops: 1991 Mazda Miata Special Edition – Sold?
July 30, 2021 Update – We just confirmed the listing for this “Classifind” expired, so with no replacement found we’re assuming this ride “Sold?” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call us directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.
Following the hugely successful launch of the original Miata in 1990, for 1991 Mazda launched the first of what would eventually become a long line of highly desirable special edition models. This first run, now referred to by Miata enthusiasts as the “BRG Edition,” was limited to 3,997 units in the United States and 1,051 in Canada. The BRG Edition was only available painted in British Racing Green equipped with tan leather interior and tonneau cover. The interior also featured a wooden Nardi shift knob and handbrake lever, stainless steel door sills, air conditioning, CD player, cruise control, and headrest speakers.
One of the 3,997 1991 BRG Special Editions was once listed in July 2021 on Craigslist in Gun Lake, Michigan (Chicago) by the second owner for $12,900 currently. Comparing that price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the private seller has their MX-5 priced between this guide’s #3 “Good” estimate of $7,600 and its #2 “Excellent” appraisal of $17,600.
This remains one of our favorite Mazdas of all time as it is such as step up in luxury compared to the regular MX-5s of this vintage. The fact this example comes with two tops is an added bonus.
Here’s the seller’s description:
“1991 Miata British Racing Green Special Limited Edition, Twincam engine, 5speed manual, Loaded, cold factory air, all power, rich tan leather interior with woodgrain brake handle & shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Tachometer & full factory gauges, Premium stereo, optional Daisy cast wheels, Torsen Posi axle, both auxiliary hardtop & folding softop are present, 74,900 actual miles, always carefully maintained & garaged, never winter driven. I purchased it from the original owner out west in summer 2020. It is kept in my clean climate-controlled building. I have a car collection & am parting with some unusual cars/trucks and vintage motorcycles and scooters as I get on in years. This special Miata was Mazda’s very first Special Edition model after a record-breaking first year of sales in 1990. It is so fun to drive & in remarkable condition. I would be confident to drive it anywhere! Can help ship or deliver…. $12,900/ reasonable offer.
