Turbo Targa: 1991 Toyota MR2 – SOLD!

Oct 2021 | Classifinds, Sports Car Saturday

October 16, 2021 Update – We confirmed the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call us directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.

The Toyota MR2 is seemingly trapped in sports car purgatory, as it is a well-documented enthusiast car but seemingly still maturing in terms of the enthusiast masses gobbling them up off the classifieds pages. This one is a 1991 MR2 Turbo that’s been in the same family ownership since new and was once offered in October 2021 on Craigslist in Atlanta with extensive service history and an asking price of $10,900. Comparing this price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller is being realistic with what his car is worth, as a “Fair” condition model is valued at $9,900 and a “Good” condition car rises up to $16,200.

The MR2 started out as a classic rad-era two-seater with a mid-engined layout, and those early models are still relatively attainable in driver-grade condition. The rare spec is the supercharged version, which is a bit of a needle in the haystack to find today. The next generation, like so many descendants, was heavier and less frantic, while still preserving the mid-engined layout. Supercharging was ditched in favor of turbocharging in the top-tier models, and power output rose to a still-respectable number of 200 horsepower. Keep in mind, this was 1991 and the MR2 Turbo could eclipse 60 miles per hour in a hair over six seconds – that was seriously fast for a four-cylinder that didn’t cost $30,000.

We came across this MotorWeek Retro Review of a 1994 Toyota MR2 illustrating how special these cars were:

Today, these second-generation MR2s are hard to find in any condition. There are occasionally naturally-aspirated beaters running around that don’t offer any real value beyond being a cheap mid-engined car and a candidate for a LeMons team, and it’s not uncommon to find one or two at a self-service salvage yard in the dry states. This one has escaped this fate as well as that of becoming a beater, and the seller has provided an extensive writeup of the work he has done to keep this turbocharged Mister 2 in excellent condition. The engine was swapped in 2018 for the 3SGTE mill, which is a common upgrade among die-hard MR2 owners. Numerous other improvements have been made, from the cooling system to the stereo system, so take a gander at the list of mechanical fixes below and decide if you want to make this MR2 Turbo your own.

Here’s the seller’s description:
