Living in more temperate climates provides residents the ability to use classic cars as daily drivers. However, the seller of this LS-powered 1970 Chevelle station wagon originally listed in December 2021 on Craigslist in Orlando, Florida realized his street machine is too nice to daily and consequently has decided to list it for sale.
Yes, we know. Chevrolet never offered an “SS” version of the Chevelle station wagon. The cottage industry of Chevelle restoration parts and interchangeability makes it easy for someone restoring a Chevelle to adorn it with replacement SS trim, so we say no harm, no foul. The hard part of swapping and sorting a 4.8 Liter LS V8 and 4L60E four-speed automatic is already completed, so this Chevelle makes for nice modern cruising whether as a daily driver or just on the weekends.
Currently offered for $37,999, comparing that price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool is well above this guide’s #1 “Concours” appraisal of $29,100 for a stock V8-equipped model. Similarly, the Collector Car Market Review Online Tool confirms the asking price is well above this guide’s #1 “Excellent” appraisal of $21,800 for a stock restored example. The premium here is for the modern powertrain swapped in combined with what appears to be a Vintage Air A/C system.
In its third model year of production, for 1970 Chevrolet stylists revised the bodies to provide more coke bottle styling, and interiors were also redesigned. The 1970 Chevelle came in Sport Coupe, Sport Sedan, convertible, four-door sedan, a couple of wagons, and coupé utility (El Camino) body styles. Only three of these (Malibu sport coupe, Malibu convertible, and El Camino pickup) were available with a choice of one of two SS options; RPO Z25 with the SS 396 (402 cid) engine and RPO Z15 with the new 454 cid engine. The base model was now simply called Chevelle in lieu of the former base 300 Deluxe and was only available as a Sport Coupe or four-door sedan. The hardtop, convertible, and sedan received the upgraded sheet metal but the station wagons and El Camino retained the previous year’s sheet metal panels (which went on for the next 2 model years). Station wagons were the entry-level Nomad, the Chevelle level Greenbrier, the Malibu level Concours, and an upscale Concours Estate. New options included power door locks and stalk-mounted wiper control.
