As an owner of an early 986 Porsche Boxster, as much as I love the car for a variety of reasons, the one thing I would change is how it could really use fifty more horsepower. That’s exactly what Porsche did when it launched a more powerful “S” version for the 1999 model year. While most Boxsters have low mileage as they serve as a weekend or third car, it’s always nice to come across an example that joined the “100K” mile club, especially one that is clearly benefitted from meticulous care. That’s the vibe we get from this silver over black leather, 2001 Porsche Boxster S originally listed in January 2022 on Craigslist in Pennsville, New Jersey (South Jersey) that is very nicely equipped with several very desirable factory options. The seller also provides proof the Intermediate Shaft Bearing (“IMS”), a rare but potentially catastrophic problem on these cars, has been addressed.
Currently offered at $15,500, comparing that price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms the private seller has their 2001 Boxster S priced exactly at this guide’s #3 “Good” estimate of $15,500.
The car that saved Porsche. While the famed German Brand enjoys growing success today, in the mid-nineties a very strong Deutsch Mark combined with high-priced, essentially hand-built products had the company flirting with financial ruin. To turn the company’s fortunes around, Porsche launched its all-new mid-engined, water-cooled, flat-six powered, sports car in the fall of 1996 at a very affordable $40,000 price point. The original base Boxster was an immediate hit for Porsche with one of the few complaints being the 201 horsepower 2.5 Liter flat six not having enough power. Porsche answered the call in 1999 with the Boxster S. These upgraded models feature a 3.2 Liter flat-six producing about 50 more horsepower than the base model. 2001 was the last model year of the original 986 design before a mid-cycle refresh came along for the 2002 model year that saw the convertible top’s rear window converted from plastic to glass and a major interior upgrade.
The Hello Road / Ethan Tufts YouTube Channel features this review of the first-generation Porsche Boxster S and why it is such a great secret in the Sports Car world:
The seller’s willingness to provide receipts as well as a CarFax are positive signs has been a well-care 2001 Porsche Boxster that has also been thoroughly enjoyed.
