Twenty-One Months Gone: 1980 Ford Pinto Wagon – Sold?

January 20, 2022 Update – The Internet and GuysWithRides.com never forget.  After apparently taking it off-market for a few months, our private seller of this ’80 Ford Pinto Wagon we first spotted in April 2020 remains available. Following his original ask of $12,000, the seller bounced around several prices before sticking with $8,500 the bulk of last year. We’ll see how long he keeps his price at $7,500.

August 28, 2021 Update – Yet another new listing with a price still set at a stubborn $8,500.

August 5, 2021 Update – Another month gone and still no sale on this 1980 Pinto wagon. Not surprisingly, the odd strategy of raising their price by one large last month did not help the sale of this Pinto and so it remains available.

July 21, 2021 Update – The Internet and GuysWithRides.com never forget. After a three-month pause, the seller of this 1980 Ford Pinto wagon we’ve been tracking since April 2020 just posted a fresh listing on Craigslist. This time around, they once again raised their asking price from $7,900 to $8,500.

April 30, 2021 Update – Not surprisingly, after a one-month pause following their latest expired Craigslist ad, we came across their latest attempt to sell their 1980 Pinto wagon dating back to the spring of 202o when the seller initially stayed firm on their $12,000 asking price.  In their latest post, they are now asking $7,900, which we’ve rescinded our “NEW!” Award as the price is now in line with market estimates.

February 18, 2021 Update – With one year gone, the private seller of this 1980 Ford pinto remains stubbornly firm on their asking price of $8,500.

January 7, 2021 Update – Call it the Holiday Effect, but this 40K original mile Ford Pinto we’ve been tracking since April of 2020 is still available.  With the new year, the private seller now has their Pinto priced at $8,500, which is still big money for these Malaise Era cars.

December 2020 Update – We just confirmed the Craigslist ad for this ride expired and with no replacement listing found, we’re assuming this car sold.

November 2020 Update – We’ll never understand why some sellers will increase their asking price when their car did not sell at a much lower ask.  Our latest example of this ’80 Pinto where the seller increased the asking price back up to $11,500.

October 2020 Update – The private seller just created his latest new listing for their 40K mile Pinto wagon, however this time they lowered the price another $1,100 to $8,800.

August 25, 2020 Update – The private seller just created another fresh listing for their 40K original mile 1980 Ford Pinto we first featured in April 2020.  This new listing does lower the price to $9,900.

July 28, 2020 Update – We came across a fresh listing for this brown 1980 Ford Pinto wagon we first featured in April.  Despite no sale thus far, the private seller has not budged on their $12,000 asking price.

The final year of production of Ford’s Pinto was 1980 and arguably one of the lowest mileage survivors from that model year might be this 40K original mile Pony Sport Wagon five-speed first featured in April 2020 in Powhatan, Virginia with the latest asking price of $7,500 which while much less than original ask of $12,000 still remains optimistic.  While Hagerty Insurance currently does not list a value for these cars, the Collector Car Market Review reveals the current ask falls between this guide’s #2 “Very Good” estimate of $7,200 and its #1 “Excellent” appraisal of $11,400.  We note we personally observed this similar low-mileage Pinto cross the auction block for $10,000 in August 2019 at Mecum Harrisburg.

Ford manufactured and marketed the Ford Pinto the 1971 through 1980 model years. The smallest American Ford vehicle since 1907, the Pinto was the first subcompact vehicle produced by Ford in North America. In February 1972, the Pinto station wagon debuted with an overall length of 172.7 inches and up to 60.5 cubic feet of cargo volume.  The first 2-door Ford station wagon since the 1965 Falcon, the Pinto wagon came equipped with flip-open rear quarter windows. Along with front disc brakes, the 2.0 Liter engine was standard equipment. A Pinto Squire wagon featured faux wood side paneling similar to the full-size Country Squire.

For the 1979 model year, the Pinto saw its last significant styling update. Shedding its original Maverick-like styling, the Pinto took on the look of the modern Fairmont with rectangular headlamps, inboard vertical parking lamps, and a taller slanted back grille. Except for the wagon’s tail lights, however, remained unchanged.  The interior was updated with a new rectangular instrument cluster and a modified dash-pad for vehicles without the optional sports instrumentation. The variety of sports appearance packages was revised, some with new graphics.  1980 marked the end of Pinto’s production run. For 1980, the V6 engine was discontinued, leaving the 2.3L as the sole engine.

While this Pinto likely offers a new-old-car experience and the five-speed manual transmission makes driving it a bit sportier, only a die-hard Ford or Pinto lover will likely want to add this Malaise Era example to their collection.  Good luck with the purchase!

Drives like a brand new car. Only 40000 original miles. The vehicle has been garage kept its life. You will not find another 1980 Ford Pinto pony sport wagon in as good of shape as this 1. Matching whitewall tires in excellent condition. The air conditioner blows ice cold. This car is a gem.“
