Have cars gotten to the point where they have become so reliable that you can buy almost anything secondhand and not be completely burned by it? That’s the question I’m asking myself looking at this gorgeous 1999 Bentley Arnage Green Label originally listed in February 2022 on Craigslist in Mission Viejo, California with just over 61,000 miles and no-issues running condition for $27,995. Comparing this price against the NADA Price Guide confirms this private seller has his Green Label below the “High” valuation of $32,800 and just above the “Average” retail of $27,600.
Now, there’s a big reason why this Bentley seems relatively affordable, especially compared to the price of new cars these days. It’s because of the label – the Green Label, specifically – as that denotes it comes equipped with a BMW-built V8 engine. Now, it’s not because the engine is a ticking time bomb, although the blue and white have had their challenges with building eight-cylinder mills; no, it’s because the Red Label Arnage came with the venerable 6.75 Liter turbocharged V8 that the Bentley faithful know and love, as it’s a Bentley-built engine that delivers the freight train of torque that the company has long been known for. It’s not that the BMW engine wasn’t responsive; heck, some owners who have driven both report motors report very little difference between the two in terms of speed. But if you’re a purist, the 4.4 liter BMW V8 is a tragedy of tradition.
The Goodfellas Garage YouTube Channel provides a modern-day review of the 1999 Bentley Arnage that makes the case for drinking one of these versus a brand new Camry:
So, the Green Label gives buyers the opportunity to enjoy all of the other opulence Bentley is known for at the penalty of having a powerplant that purists would turn their noses up at. It’s amazing; read a few forum posts about Red Label versus Green Label and all the Crew elitists come out! If you can get over that, this seems like a very affordable way into Bentley ownership, all with the added bonus of having a drivetrain that is quite common and still easy to get parts for. The seller reports this particular Arnage has been used as a highway car and still runs and drives out beautifully. Still, some indication of records would be nice, as even with the BMW drivetrain, these are never cheap cars to live with. But for the asking price, you should be able to leave some room for the maintenance budget. Good luck with the purchase!
Here’s the seller’s description:
