14 Months Gone: 1977 Volkswagen Kombi – SOLD!

March 21, 2022 Update – While the seller deleted their listing for this VW “Classifind”, given their past history there might be a chance it’s still for sale.  However, a check of their Instagram account used to track the adventures of this Kombi shows a post from two weeks earlier of a buyer trailering the Kombi in the dead of the night.  Consequently, call this one “SOLD!” after fourteen months of trying!

February 26, 2022 Update – After a one-month reprieve, the private seller just posted a new listing for this Brazilian-sourced VW Kombi. In their latest ad, the seller is now asking $26,000. Overall, the saturation of the air-cooled VW transporter market with recent Brazilian sourced examples is showing signs of cooling. Candidly, the Brazilian models do not feature the build quality of the earlier German-sourced ones and pricing continues to reflect that.

January 24, 2022 Update – While this “Classifind” expired recently, given the seller’s past history we suspect may not actually be sold yet.  For now, we’re labeling this ride “Sold?” until we find an updated listing.

January 3, 2022 Update – After two months of no sale at a reduced ask of $25,000, the seller of this Brazilian Kombi once again increased his asking price by three thousand to land at $28,000. We can’t make this stuff up!

December 12, 2021 Update – After one month of no sale at the revised asking price of $25,000, the private seller just posted a fresh Craigslist ad with the pictures and description all carry-over.  After one year of no-sale despite lowering their asking price by $9,000, this Brazilian-market Kombi is proof that not all air-cooled Volkswagen Transporters are as desirable as others.

November 16, 2021 Update – After updating their aging October Craigslist ad with a lower $25,000 asking price, the private seller of this ’77 Volkswagen Kombi Brazilian import just replaced the earlier ad with a fresh one.  In it, he added a picture with vintage snow skis mounted to the front of the van and the caption “Stocking Stuffer” as the description lead-in.  The price, however, remains at $25,000.

November 8, 2021 Update – The private seller just lowered their asking price by $2,000 from $27,000 to $25,000.

October 23, 2021 Update – In an innovative move, as part of the seller’s latest listing, he increased the asking price back up to $29,000 but is now offering to pay up to one thousand dollars in shipping costs.

September 22, 2021 Update – We confirmed the seller just replaced their expiring ad with a fresh Craigslist post. In this latest ad, the seller kept the asking price at $27,000.

August 28, 2021 Update – We confirmed the seller just lowered their asking price by a serious reduction of $7,000 from $34,000 to $27,000.  Now under the $30,000 price point, it will be interesting to watch whether this is enough to finally see it sold.

August 12, 2021 Update – The Internet and Guys With Rides never forgets. If you want to know what this 1977 Volkswagen Kombi has been up to since we last saw it listed for sale last January, you can check out the seller’s Instagram account @NJCoastalKombi.  After unsuccessfully trying to sell this Brazilian import at $30,000 over the winter, the seller is now asking $34,000.

January 30, 2021 Update – Barely one week after lowering their asking price from $30,000 to $26,000, the private seller apparently regretted that decision and has since reverted back to their original ask of $30,000.

January 22, 2021 Update – The private seller of this neat VW Kombi just lowered their asking price by $4,000 from $30,000 to $26,000 in a new listing.  The original listing also remains with the revised price however we expect that to expire any day. We’ve updated the links below based upon the new listing.

The U.S “Chicken Tax” made it cost-prohibitive for Volkswagen to import many of its Transporter variants from either Germany or later Brazil.  One version only produced in Brazil was the unique six-door model primarily designed for Limo and Taxi duty.  Rarely seen stateside, the current caretaker of this 1977 model originally listed in January 2021 in Middletown, New Jersey with a revised asking price of $26,000, which is down from the original ask of $30,000. Comparing this price against the Hagerty Insurance Online Valuation Tool confirms this private seller has their Kombi priced between the #2 “Excellent” appraisal of $33,800 and the #3 “Good” estimate of $15,600. As a second data point, the Collector Car Market Review Online Tool confirms the seller has their rare Transporter priced $3,000 above the #1 “Excellent” appraisal for a similar Camper version.

This is the second or third in a series of Craigslist ads the private seller used to list their unique Transporter.  While earlier versions relied on the excellent pictures the owner featured on his @njcoastalkombi Instagram account, this time around, he’s relying on the original pictures taken in the Miami area when he purchased it in 2018.  We encourage you to check out the Instagram pictures as not only highlight the condition of this Transporter but also feature a number of great scenic sites New Jersey has to offer.  While it’s not detailed below, this Kombi presents as a very nicely restored example that will easily have you the center of attention anywhere you decide to drive it.  Good luck with the purchase!
