April 24, 2022, Update – We confirmed the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call us directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.

When you really want to get away from it all and not get stuck doing it, you need a Pinzgauer! These portal-axle-equipped, air-cool-powered Swiss military vehicles have proven themselves to be very capable off-roading vehicles.  While many examples we come across are the open-back, ten-person-capacity, “M” model, this 1975 fully enclosed “K” Wagon model originally listed in April 2022 on Craigslist in Fremont, California makes a compelling case to convert it into an RV or Overlanding rig.

Currently offered for $23,000, a check of a number of past Pinzgauer sales here on Bring A Trailer confirms the seller’s ask is in line with what the market appears to be willing to pay for these capable rigs.

The Steyr-Daimler-Puch company located in Graz, Austria originally developed the Pinzgauer line (named after an Austrian breed of horse) in the late 1960s and manufactured and manufactured the vehicles through 2000. Military units across the world consider Pinzgauers among the most capable all-terrain vehicles ever made. While not as fast as a Humvee on dry roads, Pinzgauers carry more troops and move faster over rough trails.

A Pinzgauer will likely get you to your destination regardless of the terrain. However, it will not do it very fast as its top speed is only 68 miles per hour. While very slow, 710Ks like the example presented here can carry five of your closest friends or troops and can tow 11,000 pounds on pavement or 3,307 off-road. With its air-cooled gas engine and sealed central differentials, Pinzauers have proven themselves to be very reliable and easy to work on.  Pinzgauer’s combination of a central tube chassis design with a transaxle distributes the vehicle’s weight evenly at a relatively low center of gravity despite its height contributes to its high mobility. Like Mercedes’ Unimog, Pinzgauers utilize portal axles to provide extra clearance over obstacles.

The YouTube Channel The Fast Lane put together this summary video of the Pinzgauer history:

With only 20K original miles, the seller’s listing gives us the impression their 1975 Pinzgauer 710K needs nothing other than a new caretaker.

Here’s the seller’s description:

“This is a pretty nice California registered (no smog required) last year for California 710K(hardtop).
Great for an RV conversion or drive it as is. Similar size to a Vanagon Syncro.
Runs great and drives great (20k miles on it). Huge ground clearance and fully locking AWD.
This is the Swiss version of the Austrian Produced Pinzgauer.
Very tight with no leaks.
Super reliable PUCH air-cooled engine.”
