GuysWithRides.com is excited to offer this 1979 Porsche 911SC 3.0 for our latest reserve auction lot. Bidding opened on Thursday, June 23, 2021, at Noon Eastern Time and continues Thursday, July 8, 2021, at 7:00 pm Eastern Standard Time. In 1978, Porsche introduced the new version of the 911, called the ‘911SC’, with the “SC” standing for “Super Carrera”. It featured a 180 horsepower 3.0-liter aluminum engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a 5-speed 915 transmission. The move to an aluminum engine was to regain case reliability, something missing for many years with magnesium.  It’s hard to believe now, but in 1979 Porsche planned to phase out the 911 with the company’s new flagship, the 928. Sales of the 911 remained so strong, however, that Porsche revised its strategy and decided to inject new life into the 911 editions and the rest, as they say, is history.

James, the current caretaker of this 911SC, purchased the car twenty-five years ago in 1996 as a present to himself. James’ use of his 911 epitomizes what Porsche ownership is all about: throughout his quarter-century of ownership, James felt equally comfortable taking his 911SC on 500-mile road trips back to his hometown several times a year on some weekends while honing his driving skills with the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Porsche Club of America on the great road course circuits of the northeast on others.

Besides the fact he resisted the urge like so many others to add a Whale Tale spoiler, what impresses you most upon inspection of this 911SC is the overall condition of the car despite years of double-duty.  James has stacks of receipts confirming that he never scrimped on proper maintenance that includes a thorough $12,078 top-end rebuild in July 2014 at 127,038 miles, i.e. seven years and ten thousand miles ago. Most importantly, James enlisted the services of air-cooled Porsche specialist and spec racer Keith Peare at Powertech in Northern New Jersey to complete the rebuild. We’ve included copies of several key receipts and the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. below. Please note:  James has several folders filled with receipts dating back to 1996 when he purchased this 911SC.

Rad Era fans, be sure to check out the period-correct and fully functional Clifford Alarm system.  While the dated aftermarket Alpine cassette deck may turn off some, included as part of the sale is the original Blaupunkt head unit.

In May of this year, James had his local Porsche dealership complete some interior work. During that service, the Service Department completed their typical detailed inspection and found nothing needing attention.  Given that recent thorough Porsche dealer-level inspection, we felt that serves well as a typical pre-purchase inspection.     Hi there! My name is Parker and I absolutely love this Porsche. I am a recent college grad (class of 2019!) and have been an enthusiast for quite some time now. Looking at this car is so exciting, as I feel like it would be an incredible first Porsche to own and care for! However, the 10k mark is out of my current price range. Would the seller consider anything under the 10k mark?

      Hi Parker, we appreciate your enthusiasm and your passion for Porsches. As an owner of three Porsches currently, I’m afraid the days of excellent condition, $10,000 air-cooled 911SCs are behind us or most driveable 914s for that matter. All is not lost, however. If your budget is $10,000 I strongly encourage you to consider either a 986 or 987 vintage Boxster. As an owner of a ’98 986 Boxster, these are excellent, reliable cars (when maintained properly) that you can use as a daily driver. Anyone who tries to talk you out of buying a Boxster candidly has never driven one. If you need help sourcing one of those, please feel free to reach out.

    Is it possible to get a Carfax on this vehicle . Also possible to view the car. Also do you know why it got a new cylinder head. Did something major happen to the motor.

      Keith, CarFax does not provide their reports on Pre-1981 cars as that was the first year the U.S. standardized on a 17 Digit VIN across all manufacturers. We encourage you to watch and listen to the seller at minute 5:10 of the video above as he is completely transparent about why the motor’s top end was rebuilt at 124K miles. As a rule, we do not waste the seller’s time showing a vehicle until a serious bid has been placed on the auction. It doesn’t need to meet the reserve necessarily but we try to be respectful of the seller’s busy schedule.

      Maheen, sorry, but we’re confident what held back this car was the fact the seller had not detailed it thoroughly enough combined with the fact we remain a small website where we are trying to get our name out there. The seller is in no hurry to sell the car and $50K is market appropriate, especially for a well-maintained Coupe.
