The Mercedes-Benz S-Class signified the flagship line of the German carmaker’s lineup for many years and the W140 version represented that distinction for the 1991 through 1998 model years. Available with a variety of six- and eight-cylinder power plants fueled by either gas or diesel, the V8-powered 500SEL featured here was only surpassed by the brand’s V12-powered 600SEL as the top model.
As with previous generations of S-Class, the W140 was available as either a two-door hardtop or a four-door sedan. Unlike the two-door hardtop, Mercedes-Benz provided the sedan in two lengths: The standard wheelbase SE and the long-wheelbase SEL like the example featured here.
The W140 gained notoriety for its substantial appearance with a tall roof and larger side windows, described as a “driving safe box”, “brick on wheels”, “moving shoe carton”, etc. Emerging concerns for climate protection and the effect of global recessions in the early 1990s targeted the W140 as an ostentatious symbol of excess.
Originally purchased by the seller’s mother when new, this 1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL has remained in the family since new. The most important consideration when buying an older Mercedes-Benz is how well-maintained the car is. We were pleased to see the CarFax® provided detailed records of the car being mostly serviced at the local dealership throughout its life.
Based upon the CarFax and the recent Lemon Squad inspection, while this 500 SEL has its cosmetic bumps and bruises, it’s the perfect specimen for a shade trade mechanic to provide it with a full detail and some sorting to bring it back to its full cosmetic glory.
