Guess What Ride 47 – What 1969 British Car?

GuessWhatRide is the GuysWithRides.com game designed to test your collector car knowledge.

By the late 1960s, consolidation in the British Automobile industry found several car makers offering essentially the same badge-engineered models.  The collage above provides images of a 1969 British Car, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, that was a prime example of British badge engineering at its worst. If you think you can identify the car pictures, pick the correct letter below.  All correct answers will be entered into a drawing to win one (1) Adam’s 6pc Arsenal Builder Car Cleaning Kit – an $80 value we will fulfill via Amazon.

Using the picture above, readers were asked to correctly identify the correct 1969 British Car designed by Sir Alec Issigonis shown in the collage above. They could choose from four choices: 1) Austin America, 2) BMC Mini, 3) MG 1300, or 4) All of the Above.

The correct choice was 1)Austin America.  While both the America and Mini were designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, they used slightly different chassis. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents correctly answered with option 1:

On Friday, August 26, 2022, all correct responses were gathered, and one was randomly chosen to win Adam’s Polishes Starter set. Out of these, reader Brian B. won! We’ve connected with Brian and fulfilled the prize via Amazon.

I owned a 1970 Austin America when I was in the USAF stationed in England (1974-77).

It was called the Morris 1100 in South Africa. My mom had one and I used to “steal” it for nighttime jaunts. Fond memories and I’d love to own one again.

Kobus, my parents bought one as a second car when I was in grade school. Smelling the interior of this car brought back so many memories. Sadly, someone put sugar in the gas tank which of course ruined both the engine and the transmission.

My friend’s Dad had an Austin America. He said that he put 75,000 miles on the original Michelin X tires it came with. Maybe because the car was so light?

One of the worst cars I ever owned. Automatic transmission would give an earth shattering thunk. Distributed right behind the grill, so every time it rained the car would stall. Don’t even mention the Chilliwack joints

I was given the MG version as punishment for too many speeding tickets with my GS 400 !
