Windsor was a full-size car built by Chrysler across six generations from 1939 to the 1960s. The final Chrysler Windsor sold in the United States was produced in 1961, while Chrysler of Canada continued the brand name for eight more model years. In 1949, for Chrysler’s 25th anniversary, designers updated Windsors to share a corporate appearance with the all-new Chrysler Imperial sedan and the limousine as the top luxury car for the company in 1950.
New this year was a padded dashboard with sponge rubber for safety, while the Windsor continued to offer only a 230 cubic inch L-Head inline six-cylinder shared with DeSoto, Dodge, and Plymouth products. The 1949 through 1952 Chryslers continued the Highlander trimmed cars, adding an interior trimmed in tartan fabric and leather, available on all bodies except the station wagon. The Highlanders came with most options standard, including full wheel covers and radio.
Sadly, the builder of this 1950 Chrysler Windsor Hot Rod passed away last year, and all of the knowledge about the car’s build passed with him. What we know about this Hot Rod is that the builder cut the original front suspension section of the frame out and replaced it with a modern subframe. Mounted in the modern subframe is what we believe to be a Mopar LA small block V8 sending power through a TorqFlite automatic. The sons of the deceased builder report their father was a seasoned hot rodder and completed all of the work on this car, right down to the paint and upholstery. We are in the process of having the sellers (the sons of the builder) take pictures of the engine’s serial number and the front subframe to help us identify what this car now has.
Candidly, the bumpers on this car initially fooled us into thinking this sedan was a 1950 Dodge Meadowbrook. However, upon further review, the builder started with a 1950 Chrysler Windsor. Among the many subtle body modifications were installing what we believe to be Dodge Meadowbrook bumpers. Compared to the original Windsor units, the Meadowbrook bumpers appear smaller and lighter and provide a nice custom touch. In addition to the shaved exterior emblems, the body features a frenched radio antenna.
The LemonSquad Pre-Purchase Inspection (“PPI”), completed several days before this auction, confirmed this 1950 Chrysler Windsor is a solid, rust-free, driver-quality Hot Rod with several items needing attention noted in the report.
