October 12, 2022, Update – We confirmed the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call us directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.
The four-seater convertible is a rare find among older models. While a drop-top with seating for four is fairly standard these days, most 80s and early 90s models subscribed to the ethos that a convertible was best suited to having only two seats. If you seek a rad-era drop-top with room for your family and friends, your choices are fairly limited; however, of the few choices you have, the entry price is still quite reasonable. Some of my favorites are the Audi Cabriolet and the classic Saab 900, the latter being one of our feature cars for Topless Thursday. This 1994 Saab 900 S convertible is a naturally-aspirated model, and a final-year offering before the classic 900 shape rode off into the sunset. This Saab 900 was once listed in September 2022 on Craigslist in southern Maine for $5,000 with 137,400 miles on the clock. Comparing that price against the Classic.com model guide shows us that the seller is asking under the average sale price of just over $13,000.
The 900 has been around for eons, but it’s taken a resurgence of interest in 1980s and 90s vehicles for it to emerge on collectors’ radar screens. At a time, a 900 was seen as possibly frumpy, or at least only used by people who might be described as such, like professors from a New England college who wore tweed sport jackets and corduroy pants. No more, as the 900 and other vintage Saab models like the 9000 and 9-5 enjoy a strong enthusiast following, and anyone who collects iconic 90s cars has warmed up to the 900 if recent high watermark sale prices are any indication. The turbocharged model is the enthusiast’s favorite, but naturally aspirated models like this car may prove easier to live with or at least be less prone to abuse when buying one third-hand. These days, the only real hurdle to ownership is finding a shop willing to work on one and tracking down elusive parts from a steadily dwindling supply.
The EWJXN YouTube Channel features this 1996 Saab Convertible commercial:
The seller strikes me as being an enthusiast type given he has three sets of desirable wheels, including the OEM Super Aeros that are a must-have upgrade for any 900. While the lack of a turbo hurts the appeal here, some Saab fanatics won’t be bothered by the lack of boost, and if you’re just looking for a fun summer car for an off-season discount price, you likely won’t miss the added thrust. The seller doesn’t talk much about prior maintenance history but does confirm that the power top still works and that the material is in good shape. The tan leather buckets appear in good shape, and like every 900, the dash has a few cracks – but it still presents well. As per flaws, the air conditioning does not work, and the seller promises to point out some additional cosmetic flaws if you come to check it out. With no evidence of rust, it seems like this northern Saab has been smartly kept out of the elements, and I’d take a rust-free 900 S over a crunchy Turbo any day of the week.
Here’s the seller’s description:
“Very solid, nice, cared for 900S Convertible.
This is a great example of the last year of the Classic 900S convertible Saab.
Clean.
Excellent driver, smooth, quiet and shifts very smoothly. No turbo noise and easier to keep.
The interior is very nice with a few thin dash cracks but no tears in the leather or carpets.
The top is in great shape and works like it should.
Drivable and nice looking as it is or a great candidate to go nuts on in a future restoration if you want it like new with little effort.
The seats are very comfortable leather and make it ideal for top down foliage tours.
It comes with three (3) sets of wheels; the Ronal 5 spokes, Super Aeros and 15 Spoked.
Flaws: AC needs to be recharged or upgraded, a couple of cosmetics which I will point out.
Contact for more photos, details or a video call for a closer look.
Maine title and copies of previous titles if you need it for registration in your state/country.
First $7,500 or best offer. Motivated seller.“
