Produced since 1986, the Wrangler is a direct descendent of the original Jeeps that helped the Allied Forces win World War II.  Introduced in 1986 when still under the control of French automaker Renault and by 1987 (the first model year) under the new ownership of Chrysler, the first-generation Wrangler, internally coded “YJ,” was, in fact, developed by American Motors Corporation (“AMC”). YJ Wranglers featured rectangular headlamps, differing from the round ones on its predecessors, the CJ Jeeps.

Although continuing many essentials, such as an open body with only minor modifications, on a separate frame, with the same wheelbase, part-time four-wheel drive with live rigid axles on leaf springs, both front, and rear, just like the CJ-7 – the new ‘Wrangler’ was a new design with a wider track, slightly less ground clearance, more comfort as well as improved safety and handling.  The YJ Wrangler came standard with a 2.5 Liter AMC 150 inline-four, while a fuel-injected 190 horsepower 4.0 Liter AMC 242 inline-six was optional. The NP207 transfer case was used only for 1987 and replaced by NP231.

Here is the seller’s description of their 1991 Jeep Wrangler in their own words:

California registration expired in 2021. Passed smog 7/2021. No warning or check engine lights. Bone stock except for rear bumper / spare swing and wheels. She has been covered in the protective dust layer for a few years. I washed the outside but will leave the interior detail to the buyer. The floor mats are missing. The seats are in great shape. The Bimini top is good too.

Pretty darn flawless body and paint. Rust weeping from under the windshield lower seal, but no other body rust or damage was found. The tires are nearly new. The spare tire is bent. Have a soft-top, winch, old original wheels, and seats stored 30 miles away. Buyers can have them all if you round them up. Happy to answer all your reasonable questions and work with your car hauler.

Wow – been running it with no cap on the coolant reservoir and clearly filling the cooling system with dirt/debris per the radiator fill shot. Not good!
