Is horsepower everything? Well, to some people, yes – yes, it is. This sentiment only grows stronger when the power in question is easy to be had and cheap to buy. The Fox body Ford Mustang is a terrific example of this phenomenon because there’s a wide variety of 5.0 liter V8 LXs and GTs available for sale at any given moment, usually for $15,000 or less, depending on condition. So why would you buy a four-cylinder example? Perhaps it’s in exceptional condition with a verified one-owner history like this 1989 Ford Mustang LX convertible. This example is a classic cruiser sporting a red-on-white color combination and an automatic transmission. The mileage is listed as 51,389, and we spotted this Mustang in November 2022 on Craigslist in Vero Beach, Florida, for $7,650. Comparing that price against the Classic.com model guide shows that the seller is asking below the going rate, which is pegged at $11,672 over the last few sales of similar models.
I swung by my local upholstery guy’s shop a few weeks ago. He mentioned while at his summer home in Maine, he picked up a very clean, four-cylinder Mustang convertible. I wasn’t all that excited by a Fox body droptop with the base model engine, but upon seeing it in person, my perspective shifted because of how clean the car was. The same could be said for the seller’s car, proving how low mileage can be the ultimate determinant of perceived value. Plus, let’s not forget that a convertible is almost always a better cruiser than a carver, so an automatic and four-cylinder combination isn’t the fun killer in a car like this that it may be in a true sports coupe like a 911 or M3. The Fox body Mustang is also a car that is almost as much about style as its performance, especially as a model firmly locked into the 1980s and 1990s car scene.
The Classic Car Channel YouTube Channel features this 1989 Ford Mustang commercial:
The seller reports that this minty Mustang belonged to his mother and is now being sold by the heirs to her estate. Like many older adults who have retired in Florida, the primary car is kept up in incredible condition and used sparingly. The Mustang has visited the local Ford dealer regularly, with the seller reporting that as a precaution, he brought it in for service and was told that it has a clean bill of health. According to the seller, the dealer actually wanted to buy it and place it in their showroom, and I’d believe that claim given how much foot traffic a time-warp specimen like this can generate. The seller indicates that the air conditioning is still ice cold and that the Mustang runs and drives well. Equipped with the rare and optional power top, this drop-top Mustang should be fairly easy to live with as a daily driver – but given the low mileage, we feel it’s better served as becoming a weekends-only garage queen. The asking price seems more than fair to me for a Fox body with low miles (regardless of engine configuration), and the outstanding cosmetic condition should put to rest any doubts that this four-cylinder LX was maintained as the seller claims.
