27 Months Gone: 1972 Volvo 1800ES Shooting Brake – STILL $22,500

May 2023 | Classifind Cut, Classifinds, Wagon Wednesday

May 8, 2023, Update – The definition of insanity continues with this ’73 Volvo 1800ES we’ve been tracking the sale of since December 2020.  In their latest listing they continue with only four low quality pictures and a brief description they can provide many more of the restoration.  These are very rare cars, especially with a manual transmission.  Consequently, we think the only thing holding this car back is the presentation to date.

March 31, 2023 Update – Despite continuing to try and sell their rare and restored ’73 Volvo 1800ES for over two years using only four low-quality pictures, the seller posted a fresh listing with the asking price increased from $20,500 to $22,500.

February 7, 2023 UpdateThe private seller replaced their expiring Craigslist ad with a fresh listing.  The description, pictures, and asking price of $20,500 remain the same.

January 5, 2023 Update – The private seller replaced their expiring Craigslist ad with a fresh listing.  The description, pictures, and asking price of $20,500 remain the same.

December 1, 2022 Update – After sitting out the summer and fall following the expiration of their last Craigslist in April, the private seller once again listed their rare Volvo, a car we have been tracking the sale of for two years now.  In their latest listing, the limited pictures and brief description remain carry-over along with the $20,500 asking price.

May 3, 2022 Update – While this “Classifind” expired recently, given the seller’s history, we suspect may not actually be sold yet.  For now, we’re labeling this ride “Sold?” However, we will keep an eye out for an updated listing.

March 25, 2022 Update – Another month, another new listing with limited pictures and no change in price. The seller of what appears to be a nicely restored 1973 Volvo 1800ES for $20,500. In their latest description, the seller hints they can provide more pictures of the work completed during the restoration completed five years earlier.

February 14, 2022 Update – After a ten-month hiatus, we came across a fresh listing for this restored blue-on-blue 1973 Volvo 1800ES we’ve been tracking since December 2020. The seller reports the car has only traveled 151 miles since being restored five years ago and has many more pictures documenting the process. While the latest description provides more detail than the original ad, the pictures and the asking price of $20,500 remain the same.

April 27, 2021 Update – while this rare Volvo “Classifind” expired recently, given the seller’s history, we suspect it may not be sold yet.  For now, we’re labeling this ride “Sold?” unless we come across a new listing for this ride.

March 25, 2021 Update – We were not surprised to see the seller of this rare Volvo delete their ad so quickly at the end of 2021 as these cars tend to sell very quickly when they are listed.  Coming across an updated ad two months later makes us wonder whether a prior deal fell through or the seller wasn’t getting offers at their asking price. The brief description, pictures, and price remain the same this time.

January 12, 2021 Update – we just confirmed the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!”

With nicknames like “Fish Van” and “Snow White’s Coffin” when new, Volvo’s 1800ES two-door wagon only produced for the 1972 and 1973 model years is truly the Ugly-Duckling-Turned-Swan of classic cars.  The unique design has aged very well, and prices for excellent examples continue to rise.  Had we ordered one of these new, it would likely have been in the color combination of this restored Blue 1973 Volvo 1800ES For Sale originally listed in December 2020 on Craigslist in Palm Bay, Florida, with an asking price of $20,500.  The Collector Car Market Review Online Tool confirms the ask falls nicely between the #3 “Good” estimate of $16,950 and the #2 “Very Good” appraisal of $25,000.

This is the seller’s current description:

“Rare only made two years, fuel-injected, restored five years ago, driven 126 miles.
no text or emails. Have many pics showing work done”

Here’s the seller’s recent description:

Rare only made two years, fuel-injected, restored five years ago, driven 126 miles.
no text or emails, call John. I have many pics showing work done

Here’s the seller’s too-brief description from 2021:

“restored, no rust, runs great”

I have a friend who had an 1800ES. It was heavy like a tank and closing the doors sent a message of solidity for sure. Told him it’s a mistake to sell it, which he did years ago. Gonna send him a link to this one just to rub it in (again). :o)

Love these P1800ES’s. A friend sold his gold one about 20 years ago and I’m still all over him about it.
