1999 Mercedes-Benz SL500 – Listing Elsewhere

August 1, 2023 Update – After our unsuccessful attempt to find a buyer willing to purchase this ride for $16,000, the current caretaker decided to try to list their 54K-mile SL a different way. We thank him for the opportunity and wish him nothing but the best.

July 11, 2023 Update – The seller just reduced their asking price to $16,000. This is a tremendous opportunity for a great SL in a rare color.

April 21, 2023 Update – The seller says, “This car must go!” To help that cause, he just lowered his asking price to $19,900. This is a stunning R129 example featuring a complete replacement of all of the top hydraulics that will not disappoint!

April 5, 2023 Update – The high bid did not meet the seller’s reserve price of $24,900, so we’ve moved this vehicle to our “Rides Still Available Page.”  Click the blue button above or below to navigate to this ride’s bid page, where you can either select the green “Buy Now” button or place a realistic counteroffer in the “Bid” box.

GuysWithRides is excited to offer this Firemist Red Metallic over Shell leather, 54K-mile, 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL500 in an online, reserve-style auction on behalf of the third owner.

Bidding opens Wednesday, March 22, 2023, and will continue for 14 days ending at 4:30 PM Eastern on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

This 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL500 is part of the third owner’s collection in Chicago, Illinois.

One of Mercedes-Benz’s more storied offerings is the SL-Class Grand Touring (“GT”) car, produced across seven generations from 1954 to the present.  The fourth generation SL, known internally at Mercedes as the R129 range, launched in 1989. While prior generations offered coupe and drop-top versions, the fourth generation was only available as a two-seat convertible.

The R129 Mercedes SL-Class, introduced in 1989, proved to be quite an advancement over the third-generation R107 SL, a car that traced its development to the late 1960s.  Advancements included a fully automatic, hydraulically-operated fabric convertible top; V8 and (later) V12 engines with four valves per cylinder; projector lens HID headlamps (launched for the 1995 model year); and an automatic rollbar, which self-deployed in a rollover event. The retractable rollbar could also be raised or lowered manually using a switch on the console. From 1992 forward, Mercedes-Benz offered the R129 SL-Class with a choice of either inline six, V8 or even V12 powerplants. Although rarely seen in the U.S. market, the R129 was the last SL-Class that could be ordered with a manual transmission.  In 1998, R129 received major cosmetic and technical updates with revised engines, including the V6, V8, and V12 engines from the new W220 S-Class. Those updated engines had three valves and two spark plugs per cylinder.

The private third owner reports his 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL500 received service from his local Chicago-area Mercedes-Benz dealer recently and that the car needs nothing other than a new owner to enjoy it now that Spring is officially here. He also notes that all eleven hydraulic top motors have been rebuilt, ensuring this 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL500 will provide its next caretaker with trouble-free convertible operation.

The seller notes that his 1999 SL500 features a brand-new battery with a 30-month warranty.  Also included in the sale is a custom-fitted indoor car cover.
