The 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe was a significant model in the lineup of Chevrolet’s vehicles during the pre-war era. It represented Chevrolet’s commitment to producing stylish, comfortable, and reliable automobiles for the masses. This model year was marked by a number of design updates and mechanical improvements that made it stand out in its time.
The 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe featured a sleek and graceful exterior design that incorporated the Art Deco styling trends of the era. The car had a streamlined appearance with smooth, flowing lines and rounded contours. The vehicle’s front end was characterized by a distinctive horizontal grille divided into sections by thin chrome bars. The headlights were integrated into the front fenders, and the fenders themselves were gracefully integrated into the body.
Chevrolet offered the Special Deluxe in various body styles, catering to the different preferences and needs of the customers. Some of the common body styles included a 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan, a 2-door convertible, and a station wagon. Each body style had its own unique features, but all shared the same underlying design philosophy.
Chevrolet designed the interior of the 1940 Special Deluxe to provide comfort and functionality. The seats were upholstered in high-quality materials, and the cabin was spacious enough to accommodate passengers comfortably. The dashboard featured a simple yet elegant layout with clear, easy-to-read instruments and controls. The materials used for the interior were chosen to reflect the era’s aesthetic, combining functionality with style.
Under the hood, the 1940 Special Deluxe received mechanical upgrades that contributed to its performance and reliability. The standard engine was a 216.5 cubic inch inline-six engine, known for its smooth operation and respectable power output. The engine was mated to a manual transmission, usually, a three-speed synchromesh unit, which allowed for smoother gear changes.
The driving experience of the 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe was characterized by its comfortable suspension and relatively smooth ride. The suspension system was designed to absorb road imperfections, making for a more enjoyable driving experience, especially on the sometimes uneven roads of the time.
The 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe holds historical significance as it was produced just before the United States’ involvement in World War II. After the war began, automobile production shifted to support military efforts, making pre-war models like the 1940 Special Deluxe a nostalgic reminder of a different time.
In summary, the 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe was a stylish and well-designed car that embodied the automotive trends of its era. With its sleek exterior, comfortable interior, and improved mechanical features, it remains a notable and cherished example of pre-war automotive engineering and design.
Here is the seller’s description of their 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe two-door sedan in their own words:
“1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe two-door sedan. I purchased the car in 2020 from Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, PA. The car was restored in 2015 with a rebuild of the original Chevrolet 216 cu inline 6 cylinder 85 hp engine. I have some photos and papers from the restoration from the prior owner. I drive the car regularly, although it is not my daily driver. It starts and runs well and cruises comfortably at 45-50 mph. It gets about 10-12 mpg driving in town. It won its class at the 2022 Sandhills Motoring Festival in Pinehurst, NC. This is an annual Concours type auto show in central NC.
For safety and reliability, I made the following modifications to the car: front seat safety belts, dual master cylinder, turn signals, passenger side window, 12 v conversion, changed generator to an alternator, replaced electrical wiring, new fuel tank, and fuel lines, changed carburetor with Holley Electronic fuel injection, flushed radiator, replaced original am radio with new am/fm radio with blue tooth, changed floor starter to dashboard key starter (original floor start button remains), changed bias ply tires to radial white wall tires. The brakes remain drum on all 4 wheels. I have the original carburetor, generator, and radio for the buyer. I have all modification & maintenance receipts for the buyer.
