September 29, 2023, Update – We confirmed the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call us directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.

Two seats, an open top, and great handling.  These three terms are the classic definition of a true sports car. They are the threshold for a car to be featured in our Sports Car Saturday section. While various British automobile manufacturers developed the concept before and after World War II, Mazda resurrected and perfected the formula when it launched the Miata in 1989 as a 1990 model.  For the first time in history, a consumer could enjoy owning a sports car on nice, top-down days, and the Miata proved to be an extremely reliable daily driver.  Consequently, it’s not uncommon these days to come across first-generation examples with well over 200K miles on the clock.

Now in their early 30’s, finding a low-mileage, survivor-quality NA Miata is getting harder to do, but they remain out there.  This red 1992 Mazda Miata for sale, first spotted in September 2023 on Craigslist in Quincy, Illinois, is a prime example of waiting patiently for the right car.  Not only is this Miata for sale a low-mileage survivor with only 50,400 miles, but it also features the desirable “B” Option package, which added power windows, cruise control, and aluminum wheels. Another bonus is factory air conditioning.  The only modification from new appears to be the polished hollow spoke wheels sourced from a later “M” Edition example. We recommend confirming with the seller whether the original wheels will also be included in the sale.

Last offered for $9,800, Classic.com, the analytics and search engine for the collector car market, confirms the ask is below this guide’s six-month rolling results trend for similar 1992 Mazda Miata examples.  By clicking on the green dots in the graph below, you can get a sense of what comparable examples sold for recently:

As a second data point, the downloadable 2023 Old Cars Price Guide Big Book confirms the seller’s ask falls between this guide’s #3 “Good” estimate of $6,750 and its #2 “Very Good” appraisal of $10,500 for a completely stock example.  We agree with this seller’s comment they priced their Miata to sell, and we predict this example will not last long on Craigslist.

In some markets, the 1992 Mazda Miata, also known as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, is a classic sports car that marked a significant milestone in the automotive industry.  The 1992 Miata features a timeless and sleek design that pays homage to classic British roadsters like the Lotus Elan. It embodies the concept of “jinba ittai,” which means “rider and horse as one” in Japanese, emphasizing the driver’s connection with the car.  Smooth, flowing lines and a compact, two-seater convertible design characterize the body.  Pop-up headlights were a notable feature in this model year, adding a touch of nostalgia and a clean front fascia when not in use.  The overall aesthetic is simple and uncluttered, focusing on aerodynamics and lightweight construction.

The 1992 Miata comes with a manually operated soft-top convertible roof. It can be easily folded down or raised, allowing for open-air driving experiences. A removable hardtop was also available as an option, providing additional weather protection and a more coupe-like appearance.

A 1.6-liter inline-4 engine powers the 1992 Miata. This engine produces around 116 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, which enhances the driving experience and allows for greater control over the car.  The Miata’s lightweight construction and rear-wheel-drive layout contribute to its superb handling characteristics, making it a favorite among driving enthusiasts.  The suspension is tuned for a balanced and responsive ride and the car’s low center of gravity aids in cornering prowess.

The interior of the 1992 Miata is simple and driver-focused. It features a driver-oriented dashboard with clear, easy-to-read analog gauges.  The seats are comfortable and supportive, with a snug fit to keep the driver and passenger in place during spirited driving.  Some models had leather seats and additional amenities like power windows and air conditioning.  The cabin is compact but well-designed to maximize space, and the trunk space is surprisingly decent for a small convertible.

Safety features in the 1992 Miata are basic for the time, including standard seat belts, dual airbags, and anti-lock brakes on some trim levels.  Being a small sports car, it lacks modern safety features like advanced driver assistance systems, but its nimble handling and responsive nature make it easier for drivers to avoid accidents.

The 1992 Mazda Miata is often credited with reviving the popularity of small, affordable sports cars. It set a benchmark for the roadster segment and inspired other manufacturers to produce similar vehicles.  Its popularity has endured over the years, and subsequent generations of the Miata have continued to evolve while staying true to the original concept.  Many enthusiasts and collectors cherish the 1992 Miata for its blend of classic design, engaging driving experience, and affordability.

The 1992 Mazda Miata remains an iconic and beloved sports car, known for its fun-to-drive nature, timeless design, and freedom when cruising with the top down. It holds a special place in automotive history and the hearts of car enthusiasts worldwide.

This red 1992 Mazda Miata for sale appears to be a great survivor quality example a buyer can use to enjoy or show it in Concours judging.  The best part is that this well-optioned Miata shows little signs of wear.  We’re impressed that even the driver’s side cloth seat bolsters do not appear to be worn.
