In the world of sports cars, few names evoke as much admiration and respect as Porsche. With a rich history of producing iconic vehicles, one model stands out as an embodiment of the brand’s heritage and innovation – the 1984 Porsche 911 Targa Factory Widebody. This masterpiece of engineering and design captured the hearts of enthusiasts in its time and continues to do so today as a symbol of Porsche’s commitment to excellence and innovation.

The Porsche 911, first introduced in 1963, has long been celebrated for its distinctive design and thrilling performance. However, by the early 1980s, the automotive landscape was changing, and Porsche recognized the need to adapt and evolve their beloved 911 to meet the era’s demands. The result was the introduction of the Factory Widebody option for the 1984 Porsche 911 Targa, a move that would forever change the perception of this iconic sports car.

The most striking feature of the 1984 Porsche 911 Targa Factory Widebody is its widebody design. This aesthetic enhancement was not just for show; it profoundly impacted the car’s performance. The widened wheel arches accommodated wider tires, improving grip and stability during high-speed maneuvers. These flared fenders accentuated the sleek, sloping lines of the 911, giving the car an aggressive and purposeful stance that still turns heads today.

Another notable feature of the 1984 Porsche 911 Targa Factory Widebody is its distinctive Targa top. The Targa variant, with its removable roof panel, offered a unique open-air driving experience without sacrificing the structural rigidity of a traditional convertible. It was a testament to Porsche’s commitment to engineering excellence and versatility.

Under the hood, the 1984 Porsche 911 Targa Factory Widebody was equipped with a robust 3.2-liter flat-six engine, known for its smooth power delivery and impressive reliability. This engine produced 231 horsepower, which, when combined with the lightweight construction of the 911, resulted in exhilarating acceleration and handling.

Thanks to its flared wheel arches, the Factory Widebody’s wider track contributed to improved stability and cornering prowess. Porsche enthusiasts and professional drivers alike appreciated the increased confidence and control offered by this widebody configuration.

Transmission options included a five-speed manual or a rarely spec’d optional automatic, allowing drivers to choose the level of engagement they desired. Porsche’s precision engineering ensured that every gear change was a seamless and satisfying experience, whether cruising on the highway or attacking the curves of a winding mountain road.

Inside the 1984 Porsche 911 Targa Factory Widebody, drivers and passengers were treated to a cockpit that exuded quality and sophistication. The seats were designed to provide both comfort and support during spirited driving, with the driver’s seat offering multiple adjustments to achieve the perfect driving position.

The dashboard was a model of simplicity and functionality, with clear and easy-to-read gauges and controls. The quality of materials used in the interior was top-notch, with a focus on durability and longevity, ensuring that these cars still look and feel great decades later.

Driving the 1984 Porsche 911 Targa Factory Widebody is an experience like no other. The combination of the widebody design, potent engine, and finely tuned suspension results in a car that always feels planted and responsive. Whether you’re cruising on the highway or attacking a twisty mountain road, the 911 Targa Widebody delivers a thrilling and engaging driving experience.

The Targa top adds an extra layer of excitement to the driving experience. With the roof panel removed, you can fully immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the road, making every drive a memorable adventure.

  1. 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa For Sale

Does “factory widebody” mean this car was ordered with the M491 option or that factory steel flres were welded on and other OEM sheet metal/parts were used?

    • 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa For Sale

Our understanding is that the car features the M491 option however, during taking photographs we could not locate a factory options sticker to confirm that and the seller does not have a C.O.A to confirm it either. We’re currently checking with the seller whether they have other documentation to support what type of wide body this Targa features.

Hi John, thank you for your patience. The seller just confirmed he has no documentation to support the car being a factory M491 widebody. Our research confirmed that one key tell is the mounting position of the rear calipers. This Targa’s forward-mounted rear calipers indicate this car received a steel fender conversion at some point. Consequently, we’ve updated the listing accordingly.
