Our very own Rudy photographed, videotaped, and test-drove this Anthracite 1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SL, and here are his impressions of the car:
“This Anthracite over Palomino 1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SL proved a nice driving example that gives off a well-maintained but properly used vibe. Far from being a show car example, the interior presents nicely, while the exterior metallic paint presents well with the blemishes noted in the pictures.
The car ran and drove well during my test drive. All the power options (windows and radio antenna) worked as designed. While the car tracked straight with no pulling, I noticed the steering wheel is not aligned relative to the car’s wheel position. The canvas top appears to be in like new condition, including the plastic rear windows. I did not hear any noises from the car during my short drive, and the brakes tracked straight when applied.
Overall, this is a nice driver-quality Mercedes-Benz 380SL that will make for a budget-friendly classic convertible if you prefer a more luxurious top-down drive.
The Deets
The 1983 Mercedes-Benz 380SL, a part of the iconic R107 series, remains an enduring symbol of automotive luxury, combining German engineering excellence with timeless design. Introduced in 1971 as the replacement for the W113 Pagoda, the R107 series quickly garnered a reputation for unparalleled quality and sophistication. By the time the 380SL rolled off the assembly line in 1983, it had established itself as a beloved classic.
Under the hood, the 1983 380SL features a 3.8-liter V8 engine that delivers 155 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque. While these figures might not sound impressive by today’s standards, it’s important to remember that the 380SL was never intended to be a sports car; rather, it’s a grand tourer designed for relaxed cruising and highway journeys. Its engine is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission that contributes to a silky-smooth driving experience. This powertrain combination provides adequate performance and a refined driving sensation that enthusiasts continue to appreciate.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the 380SL is its striking exterior design. The cabin is appointed with high-quality materials, including sumptuous leather upholstery and fine wood trim. The seats offer excellent support and comfort, making long drives a pleasure. The dashboard is well laid out and filled with easy-to-read analog gauges, while the center console houses the climate control and audio systems. The Becker Grand Prix radio, a period-correct feature, adds a touch of nostalgia to the driving experience.
For its time, the 380SL was well-equipped with a range of modern features, including power windows, power mirrors, and a power antenna. Air conditioning came standard, enhancing the car’s usability in different weather conditions. Although it may lack some of the contemporary infotainment technology found in today’s vehicles, the 380SL’s driving experience is so captivating that it doesn’t leave drivers yearning for such distractions.
The 1983 380SL also pays careful attention to safety. It features anti-lock brakes, a reinforced passenger compartment, and a solid crumple zone design to protect occupants in the event of a collision. Additionally, a driver’s side airbag was introduced in the 1981 model year, improving occupant safety.
The handling characteristics of the 380SL are known for their balance and poise. The well-tuned suspension and precise steering offer a confident and composed ride. While it’s not a sports car, the 380SL feels planted on the road, ensuring a stable and reassuring driving experience. It’s an ideal car for those who appreciate a blend of comfort and predictable road manners.
