These portal-axle-equipped, air-cool-powered Swiss military vehicles have proven themselves to be very capable off-roading vehicles. For a variety of reasons, a number of these vehicles have been imported into the U.S. for civilian duty. Most examples we come across are the open-back, ten-person-capacity, “M” model.
The Steyr-Daimler-Puch company, located in Graz, Austria, originally developed the Pinzgauer line (named after an Austrian horse breed) in the late 1960s and manufactured the vehicles through 2000. Lots of work and many new parts including, 5 General Grabber X3 LT 285/75-16 tires with Dynabead internal balancing and Sachs shock absorbers giving 16” of ground clearance. Custom made front bumper and brush guard with recovery shackles and a 2” hitch receiver. Brush guard folds down and converts to a game carrier. Rear pintle hitch has been replaced with a custom made 2” hitch receiver for towing (up to 10,000lbs on road and 3,500lbs off road) it has an entry step mounted for convenient entry to rear. 24 volt electrical system with recent batteries, Petronix ignition with high output MSD coil. New one piece axle boots, steering wiper and yoke seals, rear main seal, hub seals, cup seals, fully rebuilt locker housings and all-wheel drive engagement slave cylinder. Recent muffler with re-routed tail pipe.
