When you really want to get away from it all and not get stuck doing it, you need a Pinzgauer! These portal-axle-equipped, air-cool-powered Swiss military vehicles have proven themselves to be very capable off-roading vehicles.  For a variety of reasons, a number of these vehicles have been imported into the U.S. for civilian duty. Most examples we come across are the open-back, ten-person-capacity, “M” model.

The Steyr-Daimler-Puch company, located in Graz, Austria, originally developed the Pinzgauer line (named after an Austrian horse breed) in the late 1960s and manufactured the vehicles through 2000. Military units worldwide consider Pinzgauers among the most capable all-terrain vehicles ever made. While not as fast as a Humvee on dry roads, Pinzgauers carry more troops and move faster over rough trails.

This 1973 Pinzgauer 710M For Sale, last spotted on Craigslist in Granville, New York (Glens Falls), in November 2023, is our latest example.  The seller notes their Pinzgauer benefits from a fair amount of mechanical sorting and a fresh set of tires.

The 1973 Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 710M is a remarkable off-road vehicle that has earned its place in automotive history for its rugged design, exceptional off-road capabilities, and unique engineering features. Developed by the Austrian manufacturer Steyr-Daimler-Puch in the early 1970s, the Pinzgauer 710M was specifically designed for military use, but its versatility and reliability made it popular in various civilian applications as well.

At the heart of the Pinzgauer 710M is its robust chassis, which features a 4×4 configuration with portal axles. The portal axles are a defining characteristic of the Pinzgauer, providing increased ground clearance without sacrificing stability. The chassis is a central tube frame, contributing to the vehicle’s exceptional durability and load-carrying capacity. The suspension system employs coil springs and shock absorbers, providing a balanced combination of comfort and off-road performance.

Powering the 1973 Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 710M is an air-cooled, four-cylinder engine located in the rear of the vehicle. This layout contributes to its excellent weight distribution, enhancing off-road traction. The engine is a 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed unit, delivering around 90 horsepower. This power is transferred to all four wheels through a manual transmission, allowing the driver precise control over the vehicle’s performance, especially in challenging terrains.

The Pinzgauer’s off-road prowess is truly exceptional. The combination of its portal axles, high ground clearance, and advanced suspension system enables it to conquer steep inclines, rough terrain, and even ford through water bodies. The vehicle’s ability to articulate its axles ensures that all four wheels maintain contact with the ground, maximizing traction in challenging conditions. The Pinzgauer 710M’s off-road capabilities make it an ideal choice for military applications, exploration, and recreational off-roading.

The Pinzgauer 710M features a utilitarian body design, emphasizing functionality and versatility. Its body is constructed from corrosion-resistant materials, contributing to its longevity in harsh environments. The cabin is spacious and can accommodate up to ten occupants, making it suitable for troop transport or various civilian applications. The rear compartment is adaptable and can be configured for different purposes, such as cargo transport or as a platform for specialized equipment.

The Pinzgauer 710M is equipped with a unique and effective steering system. The vehicle utilizes a fully articulated steering system, allowing for a tight turning radius. This feature is invaluable in off-road situations where maneuverability is crucial. The articulated steering, combined with the vehicle’s compact dimensions, enables it to navigate through narrow trails and tight spaces with ease.

One of the key attributes of the Pinzgauer 710M is its ease of maintenance and exceptional durability. The air-cooled engine requires less maintenance compared to water-cooled counterparts, and the vehicle’s simple mechanical design facilitates repairs in field conditions. The chassis and components are built to withstand the rigors of off-road use and military operations, contributing to the vehicle’s reputation for reliability and longevity.

The Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 710M has left an enduring legacy in the world of off-road vehicles. Its innovative design and engineering features have influenced subsequent generations of military and civilian off-road vehicles. Pinzgauer’s success is measured by its military service longevity and widespread adoption in various civilian roles, including search and rescue, exploration, and adventure tourism.

The 1973 Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 710M stands as a testament to Austrian engineering ingenuity. Its distinctive features, including the portal axles, articulated steering, and rugged design, have solidified its place in off-road vehicle history. Whether navigating treacherous military landscapes or providing reliable transport in remote civilian applications, the Pinzgauer 710M remains an iconic and versatile vehicle that continues to capture the imagination of off-road enthusiasts and military professionals alike.
