January 31, 2024, Update – We confirmed the seller of this “Classifind” deleted their listing, so we’re now able to call this one “SOLD!” While this one got away, please reach out either by email or call us directly if you’d like to be informed when we come across something similar.

In Greek mythology, Sirens were often portrayed as attractive, half human women with beautiful voices who entranced sailors enough to crash their vessels. There are many classic cars that act like the Siren’s song. The Porsche 928 sitting dormant in my garage is a prime example.  As maddening as that car can be, when it’s running right, I’m tempted once again into keeping it longer than I really should.

Jaguars have a similar effect on me.  Luckily, most of the classic Jaguars that tempt me like a Siren are priced well beyond my current means. While I can’t afford a V12-powered XKE, there is a very tempting alternative: the Jaguar XK8. Launched in 1996 as the long overdue replacement for the two-decade-old XJS, the XK8 featured a modern V8 in a body reminiscent of the classic XKE.  Unlike that classic, the XK8 was conceived at a time when Jaguar was under Ford ownership. While quality improved vastly, these are still Jaguars. Consequently, as pretty as they are, they depreciate like a stone.

A prime example is this all black 1997 Jaguar XK8 convertible for sale, last spotted on Craigslist in Conroe, Texas (Houston) in January 2024. The seller reports it is a one owner car with only 42,325 original miles. Giving us slight pause is how the seller wrote their description, “One owner*.” The asterisk may be their way of saying they bought this XK8 for the original owner but have not registered it in their name.  No harm, no foul, but if the seller has only owned the car several months, we would want to confirm what they paid for it and what they put into the car during the brief ownership.

Last offered for $8,477, Classic.com, the analytics and search engine for the collector car market, confirms the ask is below the mean of this guide’s six-month results for all 1997 Jaguar XK8 body styles and powertrains.  By clicking on the green dots in the graph below, you can get a sense of what comparable examples sold for recently:

As a second data point, the downloadable 2023 Old Cars Price Guide Big Book confirms the seller’s ask falls between this guide’s #4 “Good” (daily driver) estimate of $5,800 and it’s #3 “Very Good” appraisal of $13,050 for a completely stock example.
