By the early 1970s, the mid-size two-door personal luxury coupe quickly became a popular choice among American consumers.  Leading that trend was Oldsmobile’s Cutlass line, particularly in “Supreme” trim form. One year into the already-successful new “Colonnade” hardtop body style, for 1974 Oldsmobile designers did little to mess with a good sales formula.  The main highlight was safety-related as manufacturers were forced to introduced an interlock that prevented cars from starting unless the driver’s seat belt was engaged.

The technology of the day for this interlock proved unreliable as many consumers complained about the system sometimes preventing the car from starting.  Seat belt compliance at the time was very low, so many drivers kept the belt fastened close the the seat behind them to ensure their cars would start reliably.
