April 20, 2024 Update – While the seller’s Craiglist ad link still works, it appears they saved five dollars by replacing the Porsche 968 featured in this blog post with a 1990 944 S2 with only 15K miles.  Consequently we’re assuming this 968 is now sold.

Through the Porsche Club of America, I’ve had the privilege to meet many knowledgeable marque enthusiasts and restorers.  It’s always interesting to see what Porsches they prefer driving.  One couple in particular really stands out. They are legendary experts on the proper restoration of vintage air-cooled Porsche 911s and 356s. With the explosion of vintage 356 prices a few years ago, they realized their long-term 356 cabriolet had become almost too valuable to continue driving regularly.  They elected to take advantage of a hot market and sold what was a nicely maintained, driver-quality 356 and sold it.

What did they replace their 356 with? A stunning Porsche 968 Cabriolet.  When I asked the couple why they chose the 968 they quoted three reasons. The first is long distance comfort.  Compared to the cramped 356, a 968 Cabriolet is a much more comfortable car that offers a tremendous amount of usable luggage space as well as decent air conditioning.  The second is rarity.  The couple pointed out that the 968 was a poor seller for Porsche when new.  Porsche only produced 4,374 968 Cabriolets from 1992 to 1995, making them one of the rarest of the marques’ cars.  Rarity equals price stability, especially now that the enthusiast world is finally embracing these cars. The third is price.  While prices of quality 968s are on the rise, they remain a relative bargain compared to an air cooled 993 911 from the early 1990s.

During the 968’s production run, Porsche elected to offer some wild colors; a search of The Porsche Club of America’s Rennbow Color Chart  will confirm that.  Those colors aren’t for everyone, so for the more discerning buyer this Black Over Tan 1994 Porsche 968 Cabriolet for sale, last spotted on Craigslist on Long Island in April 2024 might be a more appealing option.  Not only does this example feature the desirable five-speed manual, but the owner documents extensive recent maintenace updates that should give potential buyers confidence.

Lastoffered for $26,800,, the analytics and search engine for the collector car market, confirms the ask is on the high side of this guide’s rolling six-month results for all Porsche 968 Cabriolets sold at auction or retail during that time frame.  By clicking on the green dots in the graph below, you can get a sense of what comparable examples sold for recently:

As a second data point, the  Old Cars Weekly Online Price Guide reveals the seller’s ask falls between this guide’s #3 “Very Good” estimate of $18,000 and its #2 “Fine” appraisal of $28,000.

The convertible top, crafted from high-quality fabric, seamlessly integrates with the bodywork when retracted, preserving the car’s clean and uncluttered silhouette. Optional features such as the iconic “Turbo Twist” alloy wheels and a rear spoiler further enhance the Cabriolet’s visual appeal while improving aerodynamic efficiency.

Inside the cabin, the 968 Cabriolet offers a luxurious and driver-focused environment designed to enhance the driving experience.
