First, we recommend you download and review our “How To Sell Your Classic Car Online” ebook that’s three guides in one:
- Conditions Guide – Explains the various condition types generally used in the classic and collector car world and helps users accurately assess the condition of their vehicle.
- Photography Guide – In addition to walking users through how to take great pictures with just a smart phone, we provide a checklist of the key pictures to provide.
- Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist (“PPI”) – Our 90-Point guide provides sellers and buyers a convenient checklist to thoroughly inspect any classic or collector car.
For $9.99, you receive these three guides in one convenient download. We recommend you follow this guide no matter where you decide to list your ride online. However, if you decide to list your vehicle on GuysWithRides and it sells, we will refund your $9.99 investment!

What To Provide For a Successful Sale
Once Guys With Rides approves your vehicle for an auction listing on our website, here’s what we will need to put together before your ride’s auction goes live:
- Pictures of Title and Photo ID – GuysWithRides strives to provide a trustworthy marketplace for buyers and sellers. The key first step is verifying each vehicle posted is owned by the person listing it. These documents are not posted anywhere on our website, they are used to validate that you are the owner and you are who you say you are. Take pictures of the vehicle’s title (front and back) and your Photo ID (Driver License Front and Back) and either text them to (908)295-7330 or drag and drop here:
- Clean Your Car! – Clean cars attract top dollar and tend to indicate a seller’s attention to detail. Your car does not need to be detailed or “Show Ready,” just cleaned, washed, and vacuumed. Remove anything and everything that you do not plan to include with the sale from the car during photography!
- Pictures of Your Vehicle – If we cannot photograph your car in person, we will hire a local professional photographer that you will need to schedule a time and place for them to photograph your car. Some recommended ground rules include:
- Plan on meeting the photographer in a neutral area – not your driveway or garage! If you have an open area of land or section of driveway that does not have any other cars or open garages then use that. Otherwise, plan on using a local park or parking lot that is free of other distractions. We need to ensure the photography os all about your vehicle and nothing else!
- Avoid scheduling the photographer between 10 am and 2pm as this is typically the harshest light of the day.
- We also encourage you to watch Rudy’s video “How To Photograph Your Classic Car For Sale Online Using a Smartphone”as it shows what pictures we will want the photographer to take.
- Video Clips of Your Vehicle – Have you ever heard the old adage “A picture is worth one thousand words?” Well, in this age of smartphones and social media, a video is worth one million words! Buyers do not need Major Motion Picture productions, just three short-length videos. Between the Pro Photographer we hire and the Lemon Squad mechanic performing the pre-purchase inspection, the two of them will provide us with the following clips:
- Cold Start – With the engine compartment open and the engine cold (at least overnight), have an assistant stand in front of the engine and video while you start your classic car. Once started and idling, have the assistant move from the engine compartment to the exhaust. This video only needs to be at most one minute long. If your car features working air conditioning, it’s always a good idea to show the compressor pulley kicking on and off. Hold your smartphone sideways (i.e., landscape) to get a wide angle shot.
- Walk Around – Starting at the front of you vehicle, slowly walk around your classic or collector car while you video it with your smart phone, also in landscape mode. Open the driver’s door and starting from the center of the dashboard, slowly work backwards to show the condition of the driver’s seat and interior. This should only be a about one minute long.
- Driving Video (Optional) – While optional, if possible, have an assistant video from the passenger seat while you drive the car. This also needs to be no more than one minute long as it’s simply to show the car operates properly.
- Completed Inspection Checklist – We recommend downloading our 90-Point Inspection Checklist ( Adobe Acrobat (“PDF”) Printable Inspection File ahead of having the PPI Inspector review the car. Doing so provides you the opportunity to fix any minor things the inspector will document if you don’t.
- Description of your Classic Car – the more detailed information you can provide about your classic car for sale, the better. You never want a description to generate more questions then it answers. Following your initial description provided, Rudy may ask you additional questions during his follow-up phone call. As Sergeant Joe Friday on the TV show Dragnet used to say, “All we want are the facts, ma’am.” Keep you description to just facts: How long you’ve owned it, what number owner you are, what’s been replaced, and what the car needs currently.
If you have additional information you would to have us share in the listing, you can upload them easily using our free WeTransfer Upload Tool. Before uploading, create a folder on your computer’s desktop and drag all of the files (pictures, videos, and other documents) into it. Once everything is in that folder, upload it on the GuysWithRides WeTransfer Site. After clicking to our WeTransfer site, drag and drop your newly-created folder from your computer’s desktop to the “Add Files” window like this one shown:

Once loaded, we will automatically receive notification you’ve uploaded files.
It may seem like a lot of work, but taking the time and discipline to complete this work will help improve the likelihood of an online sale for top dollar!
If you are not computer literate, don’t own a cell phone or camera, or you have Power of Attorney for the car you’re helping to sell, please call Rudy directly at (877) 468-6497 for guidance on how we can help get your car listed properly.
